Canon EFS IS USM 17-85, 70-200 EF L IS USM, what next?

Yes
Well I now have my Canon 40D with the 17-85 kit lens which I think is pretty good and the 70-200 EF IS USM L lens which is astoundingly good. However, I would now like to get something for landscapes etc. with a wider angle. I also want to get a EF rather than an EFS lens which I can keep when I eventually get a full format sensor body.
What would you suggest that won't break the bank (the 70-200 was expensive enough for me at this stage) - second hand might also be a consideration.
Thanks
Raphael

Depends how wide you want to go.

The Canon 17-40mm f4 L comes highly recommended by many and is relatively cheap!

Sigma 10-20 for ultrawide - gets good reviews, and nearly everyone on this forum has owned one at least once :p
Canon 10-22 - again, ultrawide, and is apparently slightly sharper than the Sigma 10-20, but is pricier
Tokina 12-24 - gets very good reviews, but isn't quite as wide as the 10mm zooms.

Sigma 10-20 if you're on a budget.
Tokina 12-24 if you don't mind the less 2mm.
Canon 10-22 if you want the bestest, widest lens.

If you want something significantly wider than your current 17-85mm that will also work on a full frame camera, then the Sigma 12-24mm suggested by FranchiseJuan is pretty much your only option.

The Tokina 12-24mm will mount fine on a full frame camera, but will only project a full-frame image over approximately the 18-24mm range, from what I understand.

Be aware that 12mm on a full frame body is *very* wide, and takes some talent to use properly!

There's a good review of the Sigma 12-24 lens, including using it on full frame (film!) here:

Do Canon do a non-cropped 10-22? As you say, foodpoison, the Sigma 10-20 is talked of a lot on the this forum so it might be that I am going to have to try one of them. Martka, I think that the 17-40 is not going to be wide enough for me. I would like something this really is different to what I already have.
Many thanks for the recommendations so far.

Do Canon do a non-cropped 10-22?

No. On a 1.6 crop, the 10-22 gives the same angle of view as a 16-35. Coincidently, Canon also sells a 16-35 which will work on full frame :)

Doh:bonk:

I just re-read your thread title and you already have a 17-85 :bonk: so a 17-40 would already cover that.

Sorry :gag:
