Hi,

Thinking about adding one or both for use on a 400 DO MkII.

Can you add the 1.4 MkIII extender into the equasion as well?

Would they benefit this lens?

Thanks.

Yes and yes.

Extension tubes will work with extenders. Benefit the lens? They will reduce your minimum focus distance (for closeups) but you will loose infinity focus.

I use extension tubes frequently on my Canon 800mm as it's minimum focus distance is 6 meters. The Canon tubes are very expensive so I use a set like these:

Note these work with both EF and EFS mounts and allow you to use EFS lenses on an EF camera too, though you may get vignetting. I also use them to give me different fields of view with my Pin Hole lens. Another point to note is that, by using an extension tube, you can stack Canon Mk3 extenders which is not normally possible - though if you stack a 1.4 + a 2x you will be down to Live View or manual focus.

Hope this helps.

No, I only experienced vignetting when using an EFS lens (+ extension tube) on a full frame camera - I didn't even have a problem when I tried the EFS 60 F2.8 Macro on a 1D4 (1.3 crop). Your 7D2 has a 1.6 crop - so no issue.

Extension tubes do cost you some light but they do not cause vignetting in my experience.
