Just after some advice on buying this lens, i have the canon 550D and really considering buying this lens, but my question is, will i be able to use this lens to its full potential? is it too big for a crop body dslr? as ive heard it can put stress on the mounting ring? is it worth me selling my 55-250mm lens to put the money towards this?

Im finding it hard to make my mind up, so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. :help:

Regards
Shaun

Not being an expert by far, I would say depending on what your are shooting you will definitely be able too use the lens without problems. Not heard of any problems with mounting ring.

I'm looking at doing the exact same very shortly and probably will sell my 55-250 to offset costs

Certainly not to big/heavy for your Camera - you could use lenses many times the weight of the 70-200/4 with no problem on the mounting ring. The fact that it is a crop body has no bearing on this.

Hi Shaun

Sell your Granny and go and buy this lens :D, it's (almost*) the best thing I've ever bought in almost 40 years of taking photographs and buying camera gear (my T90 was pretty impressive though back in 1986)

*Just bought a 7D so maybe that may end up at the top of the list, certainly in combination with the 70-200L

Hi Shaun

Sell your Granny and go and buy this lens :D

nearly spat my coffee over my laptop then!

Was also thinking about getting the 1.4x extender, will i lose any quality at the far end combined with the 70/200L on a crop body? so tempted to just go for it, but want to make sure it will be ok, ive read so many good reviews on the lens, not seen too many reviews of it on crop body dslr's though.

hows 70-200mm lens compare to the 300mm version? if the extender reduces image quality? :help:

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens is one of the most impressive zoom lenses available. It is sharper than the 70-300 L wide open and has a max aperture advantage in the long end of the shared focal length range. With a 1.4x extender attached, the 70-200 f/4 IS goes to 280mm, but the 70-300 L has an image quality advantage at this length. The 70-200 f/4 IS is a smaller lens and it does not extend.

I have this lens and can say you will not regret it

Shaun, you will lose a bit but it takes a 1.4tc very well IMO.
Attached is a shot I took recently with a 7D + 1.4tc and the 70-200/4 NON IS lens, hand held. I have just upgraded to the IS version and it is better still.

I think i will be selling my 55-250mm lens and buying the 70-200mm lens, at what focal length was that shot taken Roy? whats the exif on that shot? i think you've just persuaded me even more to buy it

So...I know what i want to shoot with the lens, but do you think its worth while me selling my other lens for the 70-200mm + 1.4x tc?

Thank you again for all your help, and thank you for helping me spend my money :naughty:

Shaun

whats the exif on that shot?

7D with 280mm F7.1 1/500th, ISO 200. 26/5/11 @ 16:17:01 and processed in Photoshop CS5 to be precise... ;)

As has already been said Shaun it was at the full zoom of 280mm, f7 - 1/500 sec. It was also cropped a fair bit - remember this was with the non IS version so the IS version should be better still.
The only thing Andy got wrong was the precise time as it was taken in Majorca and I had not re-set the time from British summer time :bonk:

Is the 2.8 still worth it when there is plenty of light?
Depends if you want (and can achieve) fast shutter speeds for narrow DoF reasons... Once they're stopped down, there is even less to choose between them....

certainly buy it, I have used mine on the wifes 450D and no problems and the quality is gooooood, once you buy it you won't need the other lens and its £100 towards the cost.

Would be really interesting to see a compo of f2.8 vs f4 @ 200mm just to see how much difference we are talking about for purely DoF, ignoring shutter speed benefits.

As everybody has already said....

This is an excellent lens.

  • It combines very well with any Canon camera
  • Its a lovely light lens to carry about
  • sharp as a tack
  • great colours and contrast
  • works very well with the 1.4X

Buy it...

Great lens - my first L lens and still one of my faves. Used on both a 40D and my current 5D2.

This was taken with the 70-200mm F4 i.s on the 1d mk4 at iso 1600

It's a fabulous lens. Buy a decent secondhand one for 600ish and start grinning.

Thank you everyone for the help and advice.

I will be purchasing the 70-200 f4 on friday along with a 1.4x extender :D cant wait to have a play with it to see for myself what the lens is actually like, been thinking about it for a while and its time to bite the bullet especially now they seemed to of dropped in price a little bit.

The mrs is going to 'L'ove me lol
