Canon EF 50mm 50 F1.8 II

This lens retails for around £65 in the UK.

I think the £150 lens could be the 1.4 version ?

UK price is about £60 and it's one of the best value lenses you can get. Do a search anywhere for Nifty Fifty and you'll see for yourself.

That's the good old nifty-fifty , the best value for money lens Canon do. It can be had for £65 ish new in the UK :D

//edit//

Steep beat me to it :D

Great lenses. I have one, and got it for £50 all in on the bay recently.

Be warned though, in some instances, you will get collared for VAT etc. on stuff coming from Hong Kong.

Don't let that put you off. Sharpness that rivals lenses cost 10 times as much! Nice portrait sort of focal length too, on a crop dSLR

Cheers,
James

The others have a larger aperture f1.4 and a metal camera mount. I have one of these len's purchased from ebay. The Autofocus has stopped/broken (probably by me), but the quality of this lens is amazing, even though I have to manualy focus mine. The canon 50mm f1.8 is the cheapest lens canon sell. Not including the kit lens, which would be cheaper if sold on it's own.

That lens is from Hong Kong, so you may be laible for import tax, and if there is a problem, you can't just take it back to the shop. In UK you can get this for just under £80.

I bought it for about £70 including the delivery from amazon

Got one last month fron Kerso, £49:99, fantastic lens and well worth the money.............

Mine was £60 inc delivery from Kerso

It's a cheap sharp lightweight lens which is promoted heavily. Personally, I don't like it, or probably more accurately, don't have much use for it. Having said that I do have one just now.

Yup same for me. I have one which I bought from Kerso for £50 + P&P. I think I've used it once in 9 months tbh lol

Buy one, you won't regret it. even if you don't use it that often!

Having said that - if you can get the 1.4 version for £150 you'd be crazy not to!

Wow. thanks for that.. Id had a little lookie round.. iv found on this site and on another some pics taken with the 50mm and i was impressed.. So when i found that on fleabay i got a little suspicious!! I expected it to be VERY pricey!!

Now, which one?? the 1.4... or the 1.8???? The 1.8 says its a Mkll i suppose, but are they similar with the images they produce??

Iv just noticed the 'L' version!! lol.. Not cheap!!

Major differences are (1.4 v 1.8):
metal mount v plastic mount
USM v non-USM
robust build v cheap build
58mm filter v 52mm filter
In terms of IQ, there is next to nothing between them, although the 1.4 is slighter sharper stepped down.

Ok, so the main difference realy is the 1.4, but is it realy worth the extra £100 or so.. I must say though, the 1.8 looks vrey cheap in the photos compared to the 1.4..

I think im going to be joining this exclusive club quite soon.. lol..

Thanks guys...

It feels it too - it really does feel like something produced by Fisher Price, with a good handful of sand thrown into the mechanism for good measure  The IQ you get from it is despite the built quality. What you'd get for your extra £100 with the 1.4 is better build quality but not better IQ IMO ;)

I think full retail sales price for the 1.4 is closer to £240 so, as i mentioned earlier, if you can get it for £150 you've got a real bargain. I'd say the biggest difference is metal v plastic mount personally......

Having been using my nifty fifty a lot recently for the shallow depth of field it gives I would hope that the f/1.4 has much nicer boke, and it would be worth the extra for that reason alone if it does.

That is why I wish I could afford to upgrade, though if I could then I would probably go for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 instead anyway for the wider angle that is more like 50mm on a 35mm frame.

Michael.

fraggle101,

I received my 50mm 1.8 today and all I can say is... wow. Amazing value for money.

The lens is fast. Its cloudy were I am (and its 8pm so not much light) and with the aperture at 1.8, I was shooting at 1/1400 sec with excellent exposure and the pics are looking sharp.

I'm new to my SLR so not much experience, but I can tell I will have lots of use for this lens.
