Hi All

I would like to hear your comments over this lens purchase. Please do advise me whether it's a good purchase with regards to price-performance ratio.
I thought of going for EF 50mm f/1.8 II initially but this is just about twice the price. I would like to take some good portraits along with few wide angle shots.

Any help would be quite appreciated.

Cheers....

On a 450D the 28 f2.8 will have an equivalent Field of View of 45mm, which isn't a focal length that is usually used for wide angle shots.

Also compared to the Canon 50 f/1.8 you lose 1 stop of light (which can give you double the shutter speed in the same lighting situation). The Canon 50 f/1.8 will also be able to blur the background better at f/2.0.

So I think you need to decide what is your priority. If it's portraits the Canon 50 f/1.8 is the clear winner but obviously that's not useable for wide angle shots. However if you have the kit lens you are covered on that front already.

Thanks a lot, so you are saying I would be better off buying 50mm f/1.8. And the 28mm f/2.8 isn't a good buy given the price difference and my piece of gear. Please do reconfirm and I'll go ahead with the purchase.

Cheers...

I have the 50 1.8 and would swap it (with money) tommorow for a 28mm as 50mm is a little too long for group shots on my 1dmkIII

It really does depend on what your shooting most of.. you say you want some wide angles but your not going to get them with a nifty fifty.

Thanks KIPAX, I think I'll just go for 50 f/1.8 for now and later on I'll check some £300+ lens.

300? I thought you said it was about double the 50mm ???

Nah! 28 f/2.8 is around GBP 165 and 50 f/1.8 is about 80.

Buy a Olympus Zuiko 28mm f2.8 and an adapter from the bay, total cost £52 and awesome quality!!!! Check out flickr for these lenses. No Auto Focus but blimey it's well worth doing without for the money/quality!

Much as I like this era of Canon primes (I have a 35/2 and 50/1.8 Mk1) I pulled back from the 28/2.8 and decided to put the money towards a 17-55/2.8 which is just as fast, probably sharper and far more versatile.

Of course you may not want to spend this much, and it will be significantly faster than your existing kit lens..

Lower priced alternative to the Canon 17 55 f/2.8 IS is the Tamron 17 50 f/2.8 and that would be under £300. Both the Canon and the Tamron would be worthwhile upgrades for your kit lens.

But again the Canon 50 f/1.8 gives you f/1.8 so would be even more suitable to portraits.

Ordered 50 f/1.8 II, we'll see.
