Has any one got this lens? Is it the ultimate all-in-one lens you can get? I guess the 1.6kg weight is quite heavy to lug around all day on holiday.

It's probably the ultimate in terms of image quality and certainly the only '10x'+ zoom with an IS system.

Tamron have just announced a new 18-250mm F3.5 – 6.3 which is considerably smaller and lighter (430g) than the monster Canon. More info on the Tamron lens here : http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/news/release_2006/news0914.html
This has to to be ultimate travel lens

I'm sure StuvUk has one of these you might want to drop him a PM if he doesn't see this thread.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I did a search on the forum and found an old thread that said the 1.6kg weight is the killer. I think I'll shy away from this lens because of that. :D
The Tamron one looks interesting. Will have to do more digging and reading.

I know StuvUK has one of these, I did hear talk of him selling it, due to a change in his shooting style/requirement.

I am keeping it now as I will miss it too much : This is the best point and shoot when you put it on a full frame body! On a 1.6 crop then not much good at the wide end but for telephoto it is great. The weight is not that bad really :) Picture quality is great - bit slow in low light conditions but you can't have everything!

Why not? Why doesn't someone do a lens with this range/quality but faster??? I'd pay serious money for one of those so if anyone knows of one...........:D

Any faster and then lens would be hooooge! The Canon 300mm f/2.8 weighs in at 2.5Kg and is almost 6 inches in diameter, any x-300mm f/2.8 zoom would have to be at least those dimensions.

My godfather has one of these. They are very heavy but the zoom range covers a great deal of photography. He uses it for aviation photography. The image quality as far as I can remeber is superb.

Ah! I see.....Didn't realise that.....don't think my arms could cope. Oh well, back to the drawing board.:D

take a look at the 1200mm by canon, that might give you an idea why there's not a faster tele-zoom. 5.6 on the 100-400 is about as far as the average person could want, they maybe could make an f/4 but then it would be massive, utterly stupid massive and heavy. might rival the 2.8 400mm... now thats a lens I'd love to have
