No
Every review I can find only talks about its very close minimum focus distance that is so close that its tricky to light the subject. I then have the closest focus distance info for the lens at non macro setting. But I am trying to find out if at the macro setting you can only use it very close to the subject. So in an od way my question is what is the maximum focus distance for the lens when used in the macro mode.

24-70 f4 L ?? Do you mean 24-104 f4 or 24-70 f2.8 ?

no pretty sure he means 24-70mm f4 L, its has a macro mode unlike the other two lenses.

as far as i can remember, the focus distance is fixed in the macro mode. It locks your lens at a certain focus distance and gives you around 0.7x magnification.

Yes it can be confusing. I did mean this Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. It looks like when the lens is in the yellow macro section there is possibly some adjustment for nearest distance. All reviews I can find only mention its extreme macro 0.7x position.

wow, I’ve been a Canon user since the mid eighties and never knew this lens existed ! I can’t answer your question but have found a lens I never knew existed !

that is so close that its tricky to light the subject.

With on camera flash, or bare speedlite? Sure. They are not supposed to be used for this regardless. Invest into proper lighting for macro if you must use one.

The lens will not be optimised for macro, nor will it offer anything like a true 1:1 macro. If you mean general closeups then probably usable but not perfect. I have 2.8 version and will use it when I need a quick shot of toiletries, etc but it is a far cry from a dedicated macro lens such as 100mm f/2.8L IS. Other ones are available.

Yes by no means will it stand up to a dedicated macro lens. But very handy when on occasion you want to get closer for the odd shot hear and there.
Lighting wise I meant that it focuses so close that your own lens even without a shade on will cast a shadow.
I have now actually brought the lens so can confirm that.
When it is turned to just the start of the macro scale the lens can focus as far as the nearest it can at 70mm but also in the macro setting in that same position it can focus a lot closer. Then the more that you turn the barrel into the yellow macro section it brings the furthest you can focus closer to the subject until the closest you can focus the front element is less than 3 cm away from the subject - here starting just below the bugs feet you can see the shadow of the lens I wasnt even at the closest I could be because I didnt want the grey material touching my new lens .bug test.jpg
