Hi All,

I have a Canon ef16-35 F4 lens which I tried to trade in last year but it was picked up as having early signs of Fungus. The lens had been out to Canon for a ribbon change just prior to me trying to trade it in. I got it back and can see what they mean as there is a line of what looks like dust across the lens(pic attached), however I have kept the lens separated since and been monitoring it and its got no worse.
The only advise if have received is that cleaning it will be costly and economically not worth it, does anyone know of any company that would take a lens in this condition?

Have you obtained a quote for the work Martin? That lens is £900.00+ to purchase, it may make sense to get it cleaned?
 
From your low-res image, I wouldn't swear that it's mould growth, and by its appearance it could equally well be dust or detritus. Could it be a result of the service that you said it had?

Wherever you tried to trade it in might have made an over-hasty inspection. Try to analyse it further, or seek a second opinion.

Yeah, I was quoted around £500 trade in however circa quotes for repair are up to around £400 due to the labour involved. I was more wondering if there is company that takes them in with the knowledge of the dust/mould etc?? Unless it’s overwhelming fungi I guess it don’t matter how bad it is, the cost to strip down, clean and repair is the same. This one don’t seem too bad to me though and nothing that appears in any images.

I think it has something to do with the service personally however I did contact canon and they blew me away, said They could quote for it but would not take any blame as they are checked prior to leaving
 
Was that the Canon service facility at Elstree???
 
In my experience the mould seen on glass (or other shiny surfaces) has a distinctive pattern, in that it begins with dot-like spores that then radiate little dendritic fingers. To me what's visible in your lens doesn't necessarily have that structure. Shine a torch in from behind at various angles. And use a hand lens if it helps.

Correct there is no dendritic pattern, it more looks like some fluid has been left on the lens which the dust has clung to, I checked all my other lenses at the time and not got any other issues, I’ve obviously kept them separated since in case it was fungi and spread.
 
Beginning to look like -

scenario 1 - you put the lens with a mixed load in the dishwasher (apologies, that's a joke).
scenario 2 - someones been sloppy at Canon repair.

Are you trying to p/x or trade in because of the issue ? Have you tried using the lens , If you have is the issue visible on the image

No the issue was picked up during an attempted trade in where they said it looked like the early signs of fungi. I’ve kept it separated since incase it was fungi and spread but after 6 months or so it’s not changed at all. I ordered the rf14-35 to replace this lens. And no the dust is not visible on images.
 
You could try a company called Fixation , Sounds like its to late to complain re the ribbon repair as you said you isolated the lens for 6 months

A lens like that deserves repair, unless it gets sill money of course.

I can't see past these guys, I've had a camera and lens repaired by them. I'm thinking repair, not trade. A repair won't be cheap although I had an L lens repaired and it came to around £190, well worth it for what it was. (y)

I think you will struggle to find a company that would take a lens ( as a trade) with fungus, if that's what it is.
 
Hope you can get it sorted Martin. FWIW I've had a 1Dx repaired by Fixation, this went well so do ask the question..

Does leave me intent on researching mould prevention..
