Want to move on from my D350 but not sure.
£350 ish for a second hand d40 or £439 ish for the d500.
Your thoughts please.

I can't comment on the 40, but I have a 500d and find it great. Video is a great feature to have, and has come in handy a few times. As I say though, it was my first Digital SLR so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

What do you shoot most?

If you shoot anything that requires speed, the 40D is definitely better, in terms of AF and fps and handling, it'll be faster all round.

Durably metal body and more external controls will also be a plus of the 40D.

But if you don't need speed or fast handling, the 500D gives you video and is smaller and lighter.

Thanks for that info.
Mainly do landscape and wildlife with some street photography thrown in.

If there's wildlife in there, go with the 40.

The extra speed is valuable.

Mike if wildlife is your fortie, you not regret it if you go 40d

good luck and have fun.

I've not long upgraded from a 350D to a 40D. I hadn't even held a 40D when I agreed to buy it and I couldn't be more pleased. I always thought the body size of the 350D was fine but the 40D is far more comfortable. I was also considering a 500D/550D but I'm glad I went with the 40D.

Goes rather nicely with my new 70-200 f/4 L which is a cracking piece if kit.

40D - Better built, more confortable in most people's hands, faster AF and continuous shooting mode

500D - Slightly better image quality, video mode, lighter body
