I'm currently using a Canon 28-135is as my walkabout lens, having given the kit lens (18-55is) to my GF with my old 1000D. I'm finding that the short end of the lens is far from wide enough, so I'm after a new short zoom lens. My current shortlist is as follows:-
Canon 17-55 2.8 (Well praised but pricey)
Tamron 17-50 2.8 (Well praised, but often people recommend the Canon above this)
Canon 15-85 3.5/5.6 (Ideal range but poor low light performance)

As said above I think the 15-85 has a fantastic focal range and it seems to get great reviews, however I feel that the relatively large aperture may leave me wanting. Will the Tamron leave me wishing I had bought the Canon and is the reverse direction zoom ring as annoying as I think it could be? The other lenses that I own are a 50mm 1.8 and 70-200 2.8is and it will be going on a 40D, can anyone make any suggestions as to which they'd recommend to fill the void at the short end or provide any other choices?

Thanks for taking the time to read.
Oli.

I have just gone from the 17-85mm to the 17-55mm 2.8. I am missing the reach but the 2.8 with IS in low light is fantastic. Went to three castles over the easter period and it was great for all the indoor shoots without flash. I seem to have a bit of a problem with over exposure outside but I think this is because I kept leaving it at 2.8.

The 17-70 is possibly a good shout, I've had a little look around and only found one review online but it was positive. I haven't yet bought a third party lens and I'm dubious about quality, it seems a lot of people talk of 'bad copies' all the time and I'd be nervous about ending up with one.

The constant 2.8 on the 17-55 is definately one of it's main draws, obviously the Tamron has this too but a lot of the reviews I've read seem to suggest that the Tamron is the budget choice over the Canon, or is this just brand snobbery

I love my Tamron 17-50mm, so i can certain recommend that to you. I have also used the 17-55mm quite a bit and yes it does have the edge over my Tamron but can you justify the cost? I haven;t yet used the new version of Tamron's lens although it does have some decent reviews.
