Hello Ladies & gent's

Not sure where to put this (mods feel free to move to appropriate section) I am in need of a repair job to my Canon, the battery grip locking wheel has broken & its half way off with no battery connection so I can't even use it.

Where do you guys send your stuff to be repaired & had a good service ? It's difficult to let this repair go to a stranger so ask TalkPhotography was my instinct they will know :)

Cheers
Baz

I had my Canon lens repair done by a Don Clarke in Wotton under Edge. Clifton cameras use him. He did what he said, at the price he said, when he said. Don't know where you are in the country so this might be of no use at all. ;)

Excellent thanks ! I am no where near but I can post them the camera :) I'll give them a ring tomorrow & see what they say

@danny_bhoy did you get yours sorted?

Phoned round a few local places but very few want to even take the job on - if they do they want to charge for a quote and then send it off to Canon. Seriously considering getting the hacksaw out and just sacrificing the grip.

@-Baz- I've got more or less the same problem mate - trouble with the Canon grips is that they use cheap plastic gears in the tightening mechanism so any over-tightening will cause them to snap. You can get the replacement mech here but you've still got the problem of actually removing the grip first.

@danny_bhoy Hi Danny,

Cheers for the reply, I found this

But by the time you get the part sent from the US paid the tax & extortionate shipping I reckon cutting it off & getting a Hahnel will be about the same. I'm really disappointed with this grip my 550D never had this problem, has a lot more milage & roughage on it ! ha ha I'm going to sleep on it & decide tomorrow but I can see me taping up the bottom of the Camera & cutting the grip off (venting frustration with hammer) & getting a £40 Hahnel

Yeah I saw that video a while back - the whole procedure looks a bit hairy to me so I'd rather pay someone to take the risk! :) I just have to find someone local who's willing to take on the job.

Re the Hahnel, or any 3rd party grip really - I got one from Amazon for my second body a few months back and it doesn't seem to get on with any of my 3rd party batteries whereas the OEM grip is fine with them. They do work on the Hahnel, it just can't seem to communicate with them so show power levels etc. Probably worth picking up a second hand Canon grip for a few quid more.

Let me know what you decide and how you get on anyway Baz.

@danny_bhoy cheers for the info. After sleeping on it & calming down I ordered the bit from the U.S. This morning & set about the camera this afternoon at work. I taped up between the grip & camera body with body shop masking tape, wrapped a new jack saw blade in a cloth & cut the screw, gently gently & 2 mins later it's off ! Next to find a tiny screw driver that fits those little screws. Then part 2, replacing the part

I'm impressed mate! Just wish there was enough of a gap between my grip and body to get a blade in there or I'd do the same. I might still order the part and take the whole lot into my local repair shop when it arrives and see what they can do. Make sure and let me know how you get on when the part arrives.

Argh I meant Hack saw damn phone.... Yes I think I was lucky to get the grip almost off before the wheel let go completely, annoyingly it only had about 2mm of thread holding it on. I'll let you know when the part arrives & I pluck up the courage to tackle those teeny tiny screws

Fixation is good or h.lehmann both in Stoke, they fixed a broken shutter button for me some years ago, and did extra stuff to be nice ;-)

Thanks appreciate the feedback but I have decided to do it myself & am almost there, just waiting for the part from America which is on it's way :)

@danny_bhoy I got a quote from a company down south who wanted £130 + shipping to do it, which is crazy

Yeah that's extortionate really - it's 3x what the grip is actually worth. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the part from the US. What was the ordering process like? Straight forward enough? I'm going to order one when I get a minute.

Nothing to do with what the grip is worth, these guys charge a fortune for their time, only wish I could have got paid as much.

It was easy enough & came to about £17.50 with US snail mail (USPS) I wasn't bothered about speedy shipping down side is it arrives when it arrives, will let you know how I get on

Yeah, they're obviously going to charge a premium, and rightly so as they're skilled experts - but the point is when you start paying more than the value of an item to have it fixed then you're getting into silly territory. When you can pick up a good condition grip second hand for about £40, paying £130 plus postage to have a grip repaired is like paying £5k to have the exhaust fixed on your Fiesta.

@danny_bhoy My part arrived today & I set about taking the grip apart which was easy enough, used a precision screw driver set & a #000 phillips but I have a problem... which I didn't account for. As I cut the screw holding the grip on to get it off, I need a new screw for the base plate http://www.uscamera.com/international/cg2-2404.htm & they are no longer selling them ! Oops. Unless I can find a very cheap/broken BG-E6 to farm a screw from I'm a bit stuck ha ha Not sure what I am going to do for now I will continue the use the camera without a grip, to be honest I've not missed it & just carry an extra battery in my bag, old school style :)

TYPICAL! Can't believe they're no longer selling them! An email to Canon themselves might yield the name of a stockist at least but with all of these new parts we're getting into the territory of just buying a whole new second hand grip. I'm with ya on not missing the grip though - I've taken the grip of my second body and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.....other than lower back pain! :)

If you even get a donor grip and finish the project let me know though - I'd be really interested to know how you get on mate.

I agree, the point of this was to see if I can repair it for not a lot of ££££'s can I be bothered sourcing another scruffy grip to cannibalise ? Probably not ha ha, I use my camera 90% of the time for time lapse & have always been power I need power, I've not missed the grip & not missed the power, my gear bag is a bit lighter (thank god !) camera/s, lenses, TB3, battery for TB3, filters argh one less thing is a god send & it's made me realise something, why do I actually need a grip ? Answer, I don't for what I do, so this is the end of the road for my BG-E6. Dude if you want the part let me know & I will happily hoof it in the mail for you FOC so can go on your own repair adventure. My grip to me is now about as essential as a uv filter :D (duck & cover ha ha)

Cheers Danny, it's been emotional ;)
