Canon Battery Troubles

Yes
I have a Canon 30D and lately I have had issues with my batteries. For example I put a battery on charge last night (the battery was supplied with a 40D I purchased a couple of years ago) and the battery charger showed a solid red light within 30 seconds of starting to charge. I left it on charge throughout the night and when I put it in the camera this morning it was only showing as being 50% charged. I have two third party batteries which seem to charge very quickly but at least they seem to be fully charged when inserted into the camera.

This issue has only started happening recently and I have no idea quite why, if somebody could shed some light on it I would appreciate it.

Duff charger or duff batteries (sounds like duff charger to me though given all 3 batteries have started to do it).

From what I understand you have said - the canon battery goes to solid red within 30 seconds. Does it do the single/double/triple flashes in this time?

The third party batteries are not as quick to go to red as the canon, but are still quicker than expected. Do those batteries last as long as they always have?

My gut feel is you have a duff canon battery and the third party batteries are starting to show wear.

Yes, the Canon battery does go through the normal light sequence, I have not really used the third party batteries much in recent months so I may have to just give them a try and see how things go.

This has happened to me too. Since then I double check the battery is charging after being caught out once before. Usually taking the battery out of the charger and replacing it seems to sort it out.

From what you're saying, all three batteries are quite old so it's most likely they are failing and not the charger.

My charger does exactly the same as yours (goes from 1 blink to full charge within 30sec) with my original batteries but works fine on the newer ones.

I had a similar problem where the battery was actually fully charged but the camera would think its flat and shut down. Happened no matter what battery it was a problem with camera called dead battery syndrome, both Canon and nikon have suffered from it and the causes can be anything from firmware to dirty lens or battery contacts.

Your problem sounds a bit different but something to bear in mind if you can't resolve it.
