Anyone who's ever used or owned Canon's G series high-end compact camera will not be surprised by its (now nearly yearly) update.

From what I can gather (via Canon Rumours), the new camera won't really bring much new to the table as far as lens and possibly sensor, but will now include a HDR mode and HD (720p) video recording.

Here's the announcement as seen via Canon Rumours:

Looks like it's official now. And very nice too :) But the pics floating about show they've removed the optical viewfinder. Big mistake IMHO for this particular camera.

The optical viewfinder was useless anyway, especially if you added the lens/filter adapter tube.

Not very good, I admit, but at least it was there and your could shoot at eye level in true Cartier-Bresson style instead of that ridiculous at-arms-length busienss off the LCD, which you can't see in bright light anyway. It was an almost unqiue feature of the Canon G-series.

No doubt they will produce an accessory viewfinder to slot in the hot-shoe, which will probably mean you can't use a proper flash gun. Just seems unnecessary just to save two bob and 2mm off the size.

almost sounds like it's an update that could have been done to the firmware of the G11

Sensor is 10mp down from 14mp and presumably better ISO/noise

On the G11 its rubbish to be honest. No idea what the coverage is spec'ed at but it feels like about 75%...

I never use it.

They've already dropped the mp on the G11 from 14 to 10mp for better ISO/noise, I doubt they'd drop it again :)

Whats that big window above the lens?

A viewfinder??

75% of a viewfinder...

Quite right, sorry. I was thinking of the G10's 14mp in my post above. Must try to keep up ;) Apologies.

Liking the sound of onboard HDR though :)

Edit: maybe we ought to hold our breath. That pic is not the real thing - no way does it have a 16.1-80.5mm lens. However, the current G11 does have a 6.1-30.5mm lens...

Just think, with on board HDR, it will be possible to shoot the inside of churches - because we all know thats what HDR is for ;-)

Swordjo, that pic is a fake. It shows the popup flash from the Panny GF1, the actual pic is on the first post and would appear to show a V/F

Agree.

This one looks more like it though, on Canon Rumours - and it's got a viewfinder :) http://www.canonrumors.com/

Just how many thumbwheels does the thing need?

Every single one of them, they where a god send on the G11, all solid metal with a very positive click step to each setting, I really miss being able to just dial in exposure compensation with my left thumb whilst still having access to the settings, ISO and mode with my right.

On another note, not much of an upgrade, on board HDR? just a gimmick really, its not hard to do with bracketing and put together in your software.
HD video? no thanks, thats what video cam's are for.

There's to much money being spent in the wrong places, longer or faster zoom was top of my want list for the camera, either longer or F2.8 across the whole zoom range, better optical viewfinder was next with at least a focus reticle and confirm in it.

Another poster had it right, this could have been done via a firmware update on the G11

I hope we'll find that it's more than a firmware update in a new body.

Better sensor, and maybe a better viewfinder, plus better ergonomics and new features like HDR. Surely a sign of things to come in DSLRs.

They can't put a bigger lens in it, or a faster one, and still get it to retract flush into the body. That's the whole point of sticking with the small sensor, a small lens, or they might as well have made a mirrorless DSLR style camera with a bigger sensor and a big lens sticking out.

I'd have thought they'd use a CMOS sensor on the G series by now.

CCD sensor is key to the sensor-switching shutter, with flash sync up to 1/2000sec. CMOS can't do that.

It all sounds rather good to me. Here's hoping
