Got my 400D brand new a couple of weeks ago (£380).. With the Standard 18-55mm lens, and although it worked for what i needed it to at the weekend, i really need to invest in something a little longer for outdoor motocross.

So, i've been looking at the Canon 80-200mm on ebay and they're going for around £40-£50..

But what id be intrested to know is, if anyone has one is. Is it any good for outdoor sports photography?

I'll be using it for motocross zooming in upto around 150mm.

And does it work well with the 400D.

Thanks, Ash.

You get what you pay for, so the image and build quality will be pretty poor.

If you want high quality shots you have to pay for the better kit.

It has no USM, no full-time manual focus and in fact no focus ring at all. It's gonna be seriously slow at focusing, so won't do well at sports.

Cheaply made too, pretty much everything is made of plastic, including the mount.

Something better would be the 70-300 f/4-5.6 if you are on a tight budget or 70-200 f/4 L or f/2.8 L if you can afford it.

Oh and avoid the 75-300 f/4-5.6 - probably the worst quality lens Canon make.

Hmmm, Does it have to be a Canon lens? I have this Camera and do not have the luxury of being able to afford USM, L Lenses! :'(

Anyway, what I do have is a Tamron DiII 55-200mm and a Sigma 70-300 APO. Whilst these are not Hi Spec, they give great pictures. I took some of my boy in a Go-Kart with my Tamron and I was very pleased with them. I may be able to post if I can find!

So long as you get a good vantage point at the track or field? You should be able to give yourself time to focus o.k. at a given point (AI Servo). click away.... Both of these lenses should give you enough coverage.

I'm sure you would get some cracking images with these lenses. I actually think the Tamron lens is best. Though I haven't really had the Sigma long enough to give it a fair chance.

Anyway thats my two pennies worth!

Best of luck.

:canon:

The 80-200 is a terrible piece of glass.

If you want a cheap medium telephoto spend a bit more and get either the 70-210 F4 (slightly slow focussing but tack sharp on a crop body and only £75) or the 70-210 f3.5-4.5 (USM focussing but a bit more expensive approx £100 and not constant app) both these lenses are cheaper than the modern 70-300/55-250 super zooms, a stop faster at 200mm and sharper.

i think i still have the tamron 70-300.
i got it half price at a 100 quid about a year ago. by no means perfect but its capable of what you need.

you will hear "get what you pay for" everywhere you go and it gets annoying when you cant get silly money lenses. but if you can stretch a little you will get what you need. but as for the 80-200 it aint the best in the world.

I picked the old 70-210 f4 at a camera fair about 18 months ago for £60 and its a real belter ,so much better than the rather plasticky 80-200

Right, cheers for the advice, i wish i had the money for an L lens, Budget is really tight.

I was in Jessops today and saw a pre-owned Sigma 70-300mm, had a look and feel of it and it was in pristine condition, and the best thing, it was only £55, so i may pick that up at the weekend instead.

At the track i can get some good vantage points, i also have an hi-viz vest to get closer to the track too.

Had a play with my mates canon 70-300mm IS USM lens, and that was brilliant, but it should be for £300+

cheers again..

Ash matey!, you don't say but I'm guessing this is the NON APO version. You really should try and get the APO version. It is slightly better as most would tell you on here it would be better for Chromatic Abberation as it has an extra coating on the lens.

Don't know if you would notice that much with what you are taking, but have a read, do some digging, before you dive in.

Have a look in the For Sale/Trade section they come up all the time in their! Not sure if thats a good thing or not!!.. there was one the other day.

Anyway, its up to you.

I've had a read as I'm in a similar situation.
The canon 55-250 IS is about £180 and on the whole is regarded as an excellent lens or the money.
The 70-300 I've seen quoted as "the best non L lens you can buy". Even the bloke who does the reviews on the-digital-picture likes it (and hes got very expensive taste!).
The Sigma/Tamron 70-300s (about £100) appear to be marmite, those that have them love them, but quite a few people are disappointed and move them on.
