Hi, just thinking about the possibility of buying a 7D for action shots of my dogs, but I'm also wondering what advantages it would bring to my landscape work compared to the 550D and 40D that I already own?

none for image quality.

you do get benefit of weather sealed body, to match with your weather sealed L lenses if you have any.

No IQ improvement? Am I right in thinking it's the same or a very similar sensor to the 550D? I don't own any weather sealed lenses I'm afraid!

yes, they use the same sensor.

AFAIK, 7D has these improvements over 550D:
- better AF system (manual focus for landscape)
- more FPS (landscape is about 1 click and getting that shot, not run and gun)
- weather sealed body (need weather sealed lens)
- more dials and controls (might make fast adjustments easier, but landscape is not going anywhere)
- IR flash controller (not useful for landscape)
- larger viewfinder, might be helpful for landscape.

Have to add though, I personally would never buy high end stuff. I always buy the cheapest stuff in the best group. eg. full frame would be 6D, crop would be 550D/600D, CPU would be cheapest i7, TV would be cheapest 1080p at the size I want. So I personally see no value in 7D compared to 6D or 5D2, especially for landscape.

My suggestion would be a 5Dmk2. I seem to be seeing alot of landscape photos on them and they seem to give pretty awesome images.

But again, if you're currently running with a crop sensor you'd probably need Ef lenses. So there's an up and a down side.

Go with your first decision, it's usually the one you'll go with anyhow.

The only advantage for landscapes would be the better viewfinder and better ergonomics. But for pictures of your dog, the AF system is much better than the 40d's (I have both).

If the 40d's AF system is good enough for you, get the 5dII and feel the real benefit in your landscapes.

I'd love a 5D mark II, and could stretch to one, but as you say John I'd need the lenses to go with it and I couldn't afford them at the moment. Maybe I just need to get saving...

Just to say I disagree with all of that except the conclusion in this case (the 7d is not worth the upgrade for landscapes).

The improved ergonomics of a 7d over the 550d is a no-brainer for most 'photographers', rather than people who only care about the numbers on spec sheets. There's usually a very good reason why things cost more:thumbs:

Agree 100% on that, I love the size and feel of the 7d/60d type bodies over the smaller bodies, they feel better and are faster to operate for myself, I have owned both smaller and larger Canon bodies and the top screen is a major +.

As above, in landscapes, I cant see the point but for anything else the 7D smokes the 550, if it didnt then it wouldnt be twice the price.

What glass have you got?

Apart from lenses, you should be looking at full frame. A 1Ds2/3 or 5D3 if you are after all rounded body, or if it's just a good weather landscapes you can also include 5d2/1 and 6d.

All the points I said there are based on landscape usage, supporting my final statement.

At no point did I say OP shouldn't buy 7D for other uses.

As mentioned, list your lenses. Going full frame is the best investment I did in photography.

Cheers for the advice guys, the only L lens I currently own is the 70-200 f/4 (non-IS version) for the dog shooting. I think at the moment that going full-frame would be too expensive in terms of getting the glass required.
