I should have said, I picked up one of the cheaper copies last year, have used it once or twice when doing lots of live view shooting inside the house and it was fine - probably took about 2-300 shots (but one battery lasts about the same when using live view constantly, so I have continued using batteries).
Just looked at mine and its basically an AC adapter delivering 8 volts coupled to a dummy battery.
I did read that a chap in the states had made one himself and coupled a dummy battery to a larger battery pack, so that he could use the camera whilst hiking - think the power pack was made by Tekkeon, but it involved soldering and you obviously need to know what part of the dummy battery is positive.........
When I bought mine I could not find any adverse comments about using the cheaper copies, I could not find any technical specs on the genuine Canon version, but again recall reading somewhere on line that the Canon adapter is also outputting 8v.
The dummy battery slides into the 7Ds battery slot (may also be okay on the 5D MK II and 60D as they use the same batteries). You have to hook the power cord from the end of the dummy battery so it sticks out of the rubber door on the side of the handgrip since the battery compartment door must be shut for the camera to turn on.
