No
I have just taken the leap from bridge to DSLR and have purchased a new Canon 7d (which I am very excited about!) Just a quick question on lenses really- according to the spec the Canon 7d is compatible with canon EF and EF-S lenses; however I have been given advice that tamron and sigma also do pretty decent lenses. Do these other brands "fit" onto the canon body, or do you need an adapter in order to use them?

Thank you!

Tamron and sigma make EF fit lens options - If you getone of these (Ie one made to fit canon) then they'll fit fine... however watch out as they also make fit options for Nikon, pentax and sony , if you got one of those it wouldnt fit without an adaptor (and you'd lose all AF etc function)

Also if buying from ebay watch out for lenses in FD (canons old MF system) fit - which won't fit without an adaptor.

And finally if buying second hand do check the lens is compatible with DSLR - some very old sigma lenses arent without rechipping (anything bought new will be fine)

Providing you get the Canon fit version of Sigma, Tamron etc lenses they will work just fine. No adaptor is needed.

In general terms i'd also advise not buying a shed load of lenses before you've decided what you are interested in doing ... asuming you bought it with a kit lens I'd say just use that initially until you come up against a limitation where you need another one

You say your 7D is new! Did it not come with a kit lens? The 15-85 was shipped with a lot of 7D bodies as a kit and is an excellent lens.

Unless you really know which lenses you're going to want I'd start with the EF-S 18-55 and 55-250 lenses. These are cheap, decent quality, and will allow you to figure out which expensive lenses you want ('need').

I found one on wex photography- body only and it wasnt in the "used" section so I am assuming new. It didn't come with any lenses so hence need to source some. I think I'm just going to get something like a 55-200mm to begin with as an all rounder and then go into a wide angle for landscapes and (when I can get enough money) something like a 500mm for surf photography/birds.

Thanks for the help with the sigma/tamron lens stuff- I will keep my eye out to make sure that it's not a different fit!!

if you want an alrounder i'd say the 18-135 Is (lots arround second hand) the 55-250 is a good short zoom , but its not anywhere near wide enough to be an all purpose only lens - WA isnt essential for landscapes , you can do a lot at 18mm.

Long lens wise 500mm primes are hugely expensive - the best budget option is probably the Sigma 150-500 OS which is about £700 new or £500 second hand

I started with the 18-135mm STM kit lens which is a little better than the older 18-135mm lenses optically. If I had to make the choice again then I'd probably pick the 15-85mm lens as my kit option because those extra few mm at the wide end make more of a difference than the other 40-50mm at the long end (imo!)
