I currently have a Yongnuo YN468-ii flash unit which has served me quite well over the past year or 2, however I find it a bit temperamental. Of its own accord it turns of the AF Beam and tends to give up when my batteries are on half charge. It was a (A lot.) cheaper alternative to a Canon speedlite, however I am now in the market to replace it and have been considering the 430ex-ii.

Is it worth making the upgrade or is there a better alternative in the same price range?

What about a used 580ex mk1? Better than the 430ex2 and roughly the same price. I used one for a while and it never gave me a bit of bother although i could say that about my 430ex2 also !!! Never used a yongnuo speedlight.

The Canon guns are better built, the Yongnuo equivalents are cheap as chips.
In your shoes I'd probably go for a s/h Canon 580. I've got an old 550ex and it works great despite it's age.
