Another question please....

For aviation photography (mainly moving aircraft) would it be worthwhile replacing my Canon 75-300 USM lens which I've had for sometime, for
a new Canon 70-300IS lens?? Would I notice a sharper image with the new
lens especially for fast moving aircraft? Would the IS panning mode improve things?

As mentioned before I usually set my 300D on the TV mode at 500th of a second and let the camera set it's own aperture.

Thanks for anyone's anticipated opinions and help

Terry

im not sure that the optics are any different on those tbh, but not having one im not really sure

YES!!!

Apart from the added bonus of IS, the 70-300 IS is far superior - compared often to the 70-200 f/4L (the difference being build quality rather than optical quality)

And .... the IS will allow you to use slower shutter speeds. No advantage with jet aircraft but with props you can get a really nice blur. Otherwise they look like Airfix kits hung from the ceiling!

As a tag onto this topic, is the Canon 70-300 IS generally a good zoom lens? :) I'm thinking of getting a decent zoom lens, but I have no idea where to begin.

I have the 70-300 IS USM and I like it a lot. My previous lens was the Sigma 70-300 APO which although it was a good lens for the money, doesn't compare optically with the canon - plus my hands are not the steadiest and I just could not get a sharp picture at anything over 200mm unless I used a tripod so the IS is a lifesaver.

With all that said though, for what I have mainly used it for (and the main reason I bought the lens in the first place - motorsport) I should really have bought the 70-200 f/4 L instead. The majority of the occasions that I have used the lens, the IS has been switched off and I haven't zoomed in over the 200mm mark :bang:

As for whether the lens is for you, it's really down to what you will use it for and what your budget is.

Muahahahaha! I'm getting my Canon 70-300mm mid next week. A friend is visiting from US == £££ saved! ;)
