Any guidance on which is the better for a general enthusiast would be greatly appreciated.

depends what you are doing with it I suspect

I like my 70D , but ive never used the 760D so can't sensibly comment on which is better

As ever, it depends on your priorities. I have to say, the 760d is the first 'rebel' Canon I'd recommend for years, having added the rear control wheel.

The 760d appears to have improved IQ but not by a long way, the 70d is a little snappier in use but heavier.

In addition to Phil's comments, the 70D will be a slightly larger body as well, which you might / might not prefer.

If you can, I would try both bodies out and see if there is 1 you prefer the feel of...

70D isn't heavy though - its noticeably lighter than the 50/40 etc D (on account of having a polycarb body not titanium alloy)

760 has more MP (if you care about that - personally i'd say 18 is plenty)

End of the day either will do fine (or a second user 60/50/40 D ?) - I'd have a 760D as a back up body (if I didnt already have a 50D and a 6D in that role) so i'd concur with phil that its the first xxxD that makes the cut for me due to the control wheel)

Cheers many thanks, time to replace my trusted 550d, airing on the side of the 70d

I had the 550D and was planning to get the 70D. Then the 760D was announced. So I got the 760D and couldn't be more happy with my choice.
Excellent camera and huge jump in quality from the 550D. Had had a little play about with a 70d, but opted for the newer technology of the 760D.
Try and get hands on both of them to compare. Don't think you'll displeased with whatever you decide to buy.
