Hi guys,

Im having an issue with battery drain on my Canon 70D. I have a sigma 17-50 2.8 lens on it and i only seem to get 300 shots or so. I have tried a new battery (canon LP E6 genuine) but still no luck.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

The only way a lens would affect battery life (other than AF) is IS/OS/VR. This can drain a battery quite significantly.

Do you have Wi-Fi enabled? That will deplete a battery sharpish as will only shooting in Live View so 300 seems pretty good in those circumstances. If you are not only using Live View (or for majority of shots) and/or Wi-Fi is not enabled and you have an OEM battery then your camera has an issue- 800-1000 shots should be achievable. What does the manual say?

i have OS on the lens yes, but my understanding is that its only working when the shutter is half pressed?

also i have wifi off and i dont use live view. still only on 300-350ish shots. i have a genuine canon battery too. not sure if i need to break my battery in? as its brand new?

the manual says 950 shots

It does only activate when the trigger is half pressed, but it does drain the batter a surprising amount.

Have you tried it with another lens for at least one battery cycle?

theres a lot on the web about sigma and high drain rate. i have read that once you switch on and focus the os starts up and does not switch off until you switch off the camera. easy way to check activate the os and wait till the camera goes into standby and see if the os is still active by moving the camera

ah ok then i didnt know that. i will have to give this a go. and i have a 50mm non IS lens, which i will give a go for 1 full battery cycle

That is true,i have the sigma 17-50 IS 2.8 lens & the camera will keep trying to focus as long as the camera is on.:)

I think from memory its in the custom functions:c.fn 2 autofocus,i think its in there you can have it continuous af or not.:)

ah ok. i have had a look and cant seem to find the relevant option. any chance you could double check it?

thanks

I would have to read through the manual again,so maybe you can do that.:)

Strange my lens no longer does that, maybe i changed something in the settings but don,t ask me what.:):runaway:

hmm ok i cant seem to figure how to switch off this behavior so i have just turned off OS for now. Its definitely something to do with the OS on my lens

i think its to do with sigma not the camera as my 70-200Lis doesn't seem to do it it goes to sleep when the camera goes to sleep

agreed, just need to figure out a way to stop the lens doing this.

Is the OS definitely staying on? It's not supposed to!

Could be worth a call to Canon for help with the settings (if the manual isn't making things clear) or possibly Sigma to see what advice they give ?

Did trying another lens make a difference ?

yes another lens made a huge difference. i have emailed sigma a few times and had no response. i will try with canon.

thanks for all your help guys
