Anyone have this and are you happy with it, is it sharp?

Primary use would be motorsport and secondary would be general usage/static shooting. Really need the 300mm.

How does it compare against the Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 DG APO or do they not compare, I know cost is quite different.

Any other lens choices that are better?

Supposed to be very good. (just dont confuse it with the 75-300 IS.. its forerunner which is as sharp as a teddybears bum).

I've got one, but I've not used it yet (seriously). I'm off to RAF Cosford tomorrow, so I should know by the time I come back ;)

@oldgit thanks, have seen this and it appears to be restricted to early versions, as far as i know all current new versions have this sorted. Thanks for the heads up.
 
Hi, sorry only just caught up with this thread. As Joe says I do have this lens and it's a cracker. I am more impressed with it the more I use it. Have a look at the comprehensive review of it here. The outstanding comment of the review is this:

So in terms of optical quality the EF 70-300mm IS can be almost described as a hidden Canon L lens.

I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with it. I'll dig out a couple of shots I've taken with it and post them tomorrrow if it helps

Don't worry about the recall issue, that relates to some very early units. I checked my serial no when I read about it a while ago and it was 1000's of units ago!
 
I think the main down side is the small maximum apperture. At f5.6 you need a fair amount of light at f5.6. The IS will help for static subjects though.

For the money it's fine.

I have one. All the reviews say it's really good. So I'll attribute my soft shots from this lens to my lack of skill. :D Actually, no matter what lens I use, I keep getting soft shots. :nuts:
