Hi everyone

My names Sharon and I am new to the site, I love photography but am not a professional

I am thinking of buying one of the ablove lenses for wedding photography and wildlife photography

I thought perhaps the 70-200 with extenders would allow me to have the fliexiability for both topics

Comments would be very much appreciated

Sharon

Welcome to the site. Which 70-200 and which extenders were you thinking? There's 4 70-200 lenses in Canons current lineup ranging from very cheap to very expensive (similarly with the extenders).

Also, what camera do you have.

Hi

Thanks for the response

I have a canon 7d

I thought about getting the f2.8 L IS II 70-200mm or the 100-400 which i think is f4

Sharon

Sorry forgot to say Extenders not sure the spec but on the wex website they about £450 !!

If you can afford it, the 2.8 L IS II and the mark III (1.4 or 2x) extenders are supposed to be the bees knees (the other extenders aren't meant to be as good). The 100-400 is f4-f5.6 whereas the 70-200 is constant f2.8. If you're doing wedding, the f2.8 aperture will be invaluable for both shallow DoF and faster shutter speed in darker environments.

When you put the extenders on, they will slow the lens - the 1.4x will slow the lens to f4 and the 2x will slow it further to f5.6. so you'll end up with a 140-400 with the 2x extender on - but constant f5.6.

Cheers Andy

You have explained it so well to me, I tried talking with warehouse Express today to establish which lens would be more suitable for both topics and he blow me away on about iso etc!!!

I will ensure I look at the extenders you mentioned too I have a budget of £1500 so I am hoping I can get something reasonable for this

Thanks you Andy great talking with you

Sharon

I'll ditto Andy here Sharon.

For wedding photography you will find the f2.8 quite indispensable. A 2x extender will take the long end of your 70-200 to f5.6, thus making the 400/5.6 no different to what you would get at the long end of a 100-400. If you're shooting wildlife, you need to shoot at 400mm minimum anyway. If also you shoot wildlife, you may find you need an extender on a 100-400. A friend of mine who has been shooting in Africa seems to be happy using his 100-400 on a 5D2

Depending on what you shoot more of could also be a consideration as to which lens to get.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Thank you so much for your comments

I think I will go for the 70-200 with extender, I just hope I've made the right choice

But you ain't going to get a 70-200mm f2.8 MKII and Extender (1.4 or 2x MKIII) for £1500.

Extenders are about £380 and the lens is nearer to £1800

Personally I would have a lens for wildlife and several for weddings, but depends how serious you are.

For weddings the slowest lens you would require would be a f2.8 especially for indoor shots. The 70-200mm f2.8 MKII a great lens, but others would also like use a prime lens or 2 (e.g. 100mm f2)

As for a wildlife lens. 100-400mm not bad, sigma 50-500mm OS is another lens being suggested.

Unfortunately one lens doesn't fit all occasions.

Hi Pete

Thanks for info, isnt there 2 100-200mm lenses ? f2.8L IS II and other is a USM which is more expensive

Sharon

I'd definitely go for the 70-200 2.8 IS and 2x extender. I've got a 100-400 L and a 70-200 f4 non IS at the moment but I'm after getting a 70-200 2.8 IS and try a 2x extender on it and see if it's as good as my 100-400. If the IQ is as good as the 100-400 then I might, just might put the 100-400 on the market. I'd be sorry to see it go though as it's a great performer.
