Not wishing to hijack Marcel's thread I've started a new one to ask a question about my 70-200mm. Everything seems to work fine but I am a little concerned about a noise which I assume is the IS working. It's not loud but a whirring sound is definitely audible as soon as I half press the shutter button and goes on for a short time after I release it. Can anyone tell if this is normal or have I got myself a bum lens?

Sounds normal for an IS lens.

Thanks MM. It's just that I can't hear my 28-135mm IS make any noise at all when the IS is working. This is the difference between 1st and 3rd generation IS I suppose.

Thanks minky. I feel happier now :)

I can hear my 28-135 when the IS is going, only slightly though (and in a quite room).

It's normal, my 70-200 F4 IS does the same. The IS on this lens is notoriously noisy - probably uses larger gyros to achieve the 4-stop compensation.

If you want to confirm to yourself that it's the IS, just turn it off and you'll see the noise disappears :)
