Yes
or Canon 28-300 f4L IS. Thoughts and opinions? :)

Ive got the 2.8IS and love it...

If you have the option hire then both for a weekend and see how you get on, otherwise, personally id opt for the f2.8IS, its more versatile and if you get the f4IS, im sure at some stage you will end up regretting it and thinking you would have been able to get a better shot with the f2.8IS...

The f4 is half the weight.. that may be a factor if you plan to use it as a walkabout lens, though i dont find the f2.8IS at all heavy.

Good point on the weight - I didn't realise there was that much difference.

Not that weight is the main consideration at all. :)

Don't know the 28-300 but in love with the 70-200 2.8is.....Heard a lot of comments on the weight and this being my first "BIGBOY" lens I was a little worried before it arrived......However, I don't find it a problem, I can and have used this all day. I love it!

I cant compare and contrast CT as i dont have the 28-300. But, the 70-200 is simply awesome. It is a heavy load though so i do tend to take the monopod with it, but this has never stopped me considering taking it out and its also coming to Marrakech with me next week.

Did i mention Sharp..........? ;)

:agree: it's a gorgeous piece of glass.

I can't help but think that although the 28-300 has an L badge something somewhere will have had to be compromised as its waaayyy above the "golden" 3x ratio that zoom lenses conform to (its > 10x  )

Didn't realise you'd managed to get away with that with 'er indoors Ken! :D

Yes I do lean towards the 70-200 cos I know it's reputation and the speed can't be bad. If you look at the little gap in my lens range you'll see why I'm considering the 28-300 although in all honesty it's not a gap that bothers me much given the usual stuff I do.

None of this would be really necessary if in a moment of pure madness I hadn't got my missus interested in photography. I'd rather not duplicate the 100-400L which obviously gets used a lot so the 70-200 makes a lot of sense when you consider it's possibilites with the converters too, and AF will still work on both bodies.

Frankly I've been amazed how much difference the monopod has made to the number of sharp shots I'm getting, and the weight is no problem so you don't have to convince me.

I've always mistrusted monopds as a sort of 'halfway house' naff solution, but how wrong can you be? Old dogs.. new tricks. :D

Am thinking of getting the 70-200L 2.8 IS USM today with a 2x convertor!

Me too CT - but it makes a perfect combo with my little fold up fishing chair ;). The 70-200 also has the 3g IS that senses tri-/ monopod attachment. You'd be amazed at the number of shots I've ballsed up on the 300 that doesn't!

Hades - dont think, man. SPEND :D

LOL. The 70-200 comes with the tripod collar?

The only thing that gets me sometimes (although i'm getting used to it now) is the focus switch for distance.

Only just recently purchased the 70-200 IS 2.8 and went out with it for the first time last Saturday.........quite impressed with it :)

I tend to agree - bit too much of a stretch probably :)

LOL yeah that's common to a lot of the longer lenses - I have those on the 500 (3 postions!) and two positions on the 180 macro and the 100-400. It's easy to have the wrong one set innit!

It does speed up focusing and saves a lot of hunting around though if you have the right one set - and saves a lot of battery drain driving the AF system.

I can't wait to get my 70-200, ordered last week from Kerso, should hopefully be here soon :D
Are the buttons recessed? - I find it too easy to knock the switches accidentally on the 300 & I then spen ages wondering whats gone wrong :cuckoo::lol:

Just have. Got it from warehouseexpress.com - 70-200L and a 2 x EF II Extender.

WOOAAAHHHHH - get a quote from Kerso and save yourself a couple of hundred notes. PM him for a price at the very least.

 nearer £300 methinks

Have a long standing agreement with Warehouseexpress to be honest so its not been all bad. Delivery tomorrow, can't wait!

is this really a difficult decision, definately the 70-200. Ive tried one out and i was honestly in love. CT im from the midlands too, so i might have to rent it on the cheap from you

Fair enough - would be interested to hear how you get on with the x2 as well. More than likely my next purchase after Carole's testimony.....

i got the 70-200mm f2.8 IS its much lighter then my sigma 50-500mm even with a converter fitted so i think this is a light lens.

Check my A1 GP pics in my in the transport section they where taken with it on a 30d.

Let us know how the 2x goes with this lens please.

I've just ordered the same lens with EF 1.4 II

I totally misread the opening post... :p...

Thought you were choosing between the 70-200f4IS and f2.8IS...

Dreeder .... :bang: DOH

Im a bit thick... mainly in the early mornings... and the late evenings...

In fact thinking about it.... hmm... im not all that bright thru the day either... :bonk:

You know my views on my 70-200mm f2.8IS CT - I love the beast!! Works a treat with the 2x as well - so long as you get the focus bang on with it there's barely any drop in quality IMO.

Just buy the thing - you know you want to!!

Well it didn't help matters me thinking it was a constant f4. I wonder where I got that from.

LOL. Just gotta find the wonga! :D

ROFL - I have every faith that you'll manage!! :D

Visit Egypt, sell Jan for a few Camels, flog the Camels on ebay for a few quid.
That'll mean you dont need the monopod nor the extra body so back onto ebay with em'... bit of faith and creative accounting... no probs ;)

Just need a blind Egyptian now then.
