hi,

i'm looking at getting a used tele zoom for my new 7D...

had 'made my mind up' on the 100-400mm L IS but i've now thought about spending a bit more and getting a 70-200 2.8 and a 2x converter...

i'm 'used' to the Bigma on a Minolta/Sony set up.

any views/advice would be much appreciated,

thanks,
Alfie

I have the 70-200 2.8 but have not tried with a TC yet. I'm not sure you will get auto focus using a 2x TC though on a 7D? I have also heard that there is noticeable softening with the 2x TC (The 1.4x TC will give auto focusing and only 1 stop reduction).
It depends what sort of thing you are shooting? I have always found that whatever lens I have, I always want something longer.
The 70-200 will give you a good focal range and it's a quick lens. The 100-400 is F4.5-5.6 so although up to 200mm it won't be as good as the 70-200, you will gain at the longer end.
If you're mainly planning on using this nearer the 400mm end, I'd go with either the 100-400 or even look at the 400 F5.6 prime - I had this and it was absolutely superb!

From my experience of the 70-200mm f2.8 IS (MKI) and 2x TC (MKII), I've not been very impressed at all with the performance and if I had the choice would go with the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 every time.

I've heard very good reviews for the 70-200mm f2.8 IS (MKII) and people have said the performance of the 2x TC (MKIII) is improved over the MKII version, but your autofocus speed would be significantly hit using the 2x TC, the lens would be more prone to hunting and you would lose some detail in the images, and there's also a significant difference in ££££ between the 100-400mm and 70-200mm MKII + 2x TC MKIII

It depends what you want to photograph with either of these lens combinations
