Hi all,

I have a relatively new 6D (less than a year) and an older (7 years approximately) 24-105 L.

Yesterday they started acting strangely. First after I took a photo the viewfinder didn't become as light as it started. Taking another photo seemed to resolve this. It did it a few times. Then it refused to focus and take a photo. Manual focus seemed to resolve that and putting it back into auto worked for a few shots. Then an err saying communication to the lens fault.

I was using a new noncanon battery pair and grip. Swapped back to a single canon battery in the grip today and the same things are happening.

Has anyone seen this before?
Does anyone have any insights?
Body or lens?

I wonder if this is the typical err 01 fault which bedevils this lens? If so you will need to send it to a repairer to be sorted. Nothing to do with battery or grip. Have you tried the body with another lens?

When it happened to me it was intermittent at first but quickly became permanent.

Others may be more knowledgeable.

No, in currently out of the country traveling. Will try with a 50mm f1.8 in a few days.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did your repair cost?

More than likely the dodgy ribbon cable syndrome, pretty sure last time I read about it a figure of £118 was mentioned for repair.

If the image through the viewfinder (through the lens) was darker, it sounds like your aperture blades are either sticking so the aperture is stopped down when it should be wide open or an electronic issue failing to open them up again.

That's mostly sounding like a lens fault.

Thanks all. It looks like the appature isn't opening properly afterwards. Around £120 certainly makes me happier than potentially buying a new lens.

In at least one car it got lighter then darker after the shot, as if the appature opened then closed slightly.

Would the appature not being open affect focus happening in any way other than lack of light?

The staying dark is happening on my 400d as well. Whereas my 50mm is working as expected on my 6d.

Time to find a repair centre.

I've never had the err01 with my 24-105?

Is that the ribbon fault?

Naturally yes its the Flex Cable inside the lens that controls the Aperture and Focus with flex cables a common fault on the 24-105mm Lenses also can give error 99 depending on the flex or worse relating to the motor at times, see lots of these come in our offices daily for repair, still not as much as the Canon 17-85mm Lenses which is one of Canon's worst lens designs to date.
