Having worked with a pair of 5D3 bodies for several years, I've never seen this happen, but one of the cameras just crashed.

Just stills, not video. Genuine Sandisk cards. During a burst, the camera just stopped responding. On/Off switch did nothing. Removing battery and re-inserting brought the camera back to life and all seems fine.

Has anyone else experienced this / similar?

My gripped 7D does a similar thing, it just stops working and flashes Err on the top screen. On off switch does nothing. Opening the battery door and disconnecting the battries remedies the problem. I'm suspicious of the grip and/or a battery.

Could maybe be lens contacts? I've heard it's quite common and a simple clean can fix.

I've had an error message on a 5d3 with a canon 24-105 L.. There's a lead thingy inside ( technical term) which can fail.. I had to get mine repaired at Don Clark's.
