Just thought I would start a thread on this subject as I feel it isnt being discussed as much as it needs to.

Any users out there with advice on this and their experience using this geotagger with their 5D3's and 7Ds?

I'll start with one of my own questions.

Does the GP-E2 strictly need to be mounted on the top flash shoe or can it be suspended and latched onto the neck strap like Nikon? I would prefer the latter as I dont want the height on the camera and want to leave the top shoe available for flash.

Haven't bought one yet but looking to get one soon'ish from DR or Panamoz.

As I understood it, the GP-E2 can be set to a continuous logging mode and then it can be anywhere like in your pocket. But you'll have to match the GPS coordinates to the photos later in post processing based on photo timestamps and the GPS track. This will naturally work with any camera model at least when using third party geotagging software (Lightroom will do it for example).

The other option is to have it on the hotshoe and the (compatible model) will talk to the GP-E2 to get the coords for each shot and put them directly in the EXIF. I guess you could use an off-camera cord (but not too long to keep the comms going) but it'd be just as bulky.

If you're using it as Jukka describes you don't need to spend £300 on the Canon logger, I use an AMOD GPS logger which clips on my camera bag or belt and logs continuously, then I use HoudahGeo to marry the two up, it only takes a minute or two extra in my workflow. GPS loggers come for as little as £30, IIRC the software was another £30 or so.

Yea, loggers are cheap. And there is free software available for geotagging (matching photo dates + GPS track points & inserting coordinates + possible placenames into EXIF). The GP-E2 is of course earier to use but why can't they build it into the body.. grr.. same goes for radio-controlled flash. FFS. :D

I much prefer the GP-E2 as the is no post processing to worry about. I just don't want to rely on any other gadget to do geotagging however I understand I will miss out on the added wifi geotagging ability with this.

I plan to keep this on the camera at all times possibly with an ettl cord so it's out of the way.

I used my GP-E2 with the 5Dmk3 on Holiday and it worked flawlessly. Logging interval was set to 5s and the accuracy was very good.

On the few occasions I had a flash mounted I used the GP-E2 in its little holder on the camera strap. Completely forgot to take the USB cable with me though so I used it in Log mode instead for post tagging.

Pricey solution, but it has removed a lot of the faffing around with my previous method.

Thanks for the input Chris. Do you have to have one of the side flaps open to put the USB in there? Seems a bit messy no?
