Canon 5d picture styles and RAW Data

O.K. I have asked this question before but i am still confused. I am told that when i shoot in raw i am retaining all the data with no compression or manipulation associated with producing a photograph (i.e. a jpeg). So if i select a picture style say 'landscape' and set the sharpening and saturation to say +4 will these settings be part of the raw data and be present when i view the image in a raw editor . The reason i ask is i recently took the same shot twice with 'Landscape picture style. first with low sharpness and saturation and then with high sharpness and saturation , could not see the difference using the raw editor. Is this normal?

The Canon Picture Styles will just be discarded by most RAW editors. Canon's own RAW editor though is the exception where it is retained. You can even add picture styles etc during RAW processing which weren't selected in the camera. I don't use the Canon software though and personally find there's enough processing latitude without needing the picture styles. :)

The raw data is totally untouched. The picture style information is just stored as extra information in the EXIF, which as CT says is usually ignored by a raw convertor.

I'm glad you posted this because I was wondering the same thing

I thought the picture style is still applied to the embedded jpg in the RAW file ?

Only if you save RAW + JPEG then the JPEG has the picture style applied.

It is, or at least it is with the 30D. Which is a good point, as it means the image on the LCD screen will reflect your picture styles. If shooting raw only it is best to leave the styles neutral so the histogram is closer to the raw data, as this is generated from the preview image.

Because the small JPGs used for the preview image are very soft I use a style with the sharpening turned up but everything else left at 0.

Only if you save RAW + JPEG then the JPEG has the picture style applied.

Are you talking specifically about the 5D? With the 30D it definitely applies the selected picture style to the preview JPG even when you are in raw only mode.

Michael.

Thanks everyone. Makes a little more sense now. Yes the preview image does reflect the picture style selected. It was only in the raw editor that i couldn't see it . Any yes when i used the 'canon' raw editor it does reflect the picture style selected (thanks for that). It wasent really a problem because as was said you can apply post manipulation anyway, it was just confusing. once again Thanks
