Hi all Canon users

I currently use a 600d which I have had for a few years now and I am looking to upgrade my camera and I have been looking at the 5d mkiii. I have looked at the differences between the two and although I'm not a pro I am aware this is a pro camera, it was mentioned to me that there are no pre-sets on this camera which is not a problem as I never used the ones on my 600d as I have always tried to experiment without the in camera pre-sets and I am always trying to take my photography to the next level.

one of the big pulls for me is 1, the image sensor and 2, the image quality at a high ISO , these are just 2 but don't want to list all

So 5d mkiii users is this camera as good as canon says it is or is there another that I should look at. (canon only please)

cheers

It's an outstanding camera but I fail to see why anyone who's not a pro would ever need it. However if you can afford it then it's the same as anything... want the biggest telly you can afford? Buy it, want a better car even though you don't need it? Buy it etc etc

You could look at the 6D which will give you the same ISO performance & IQ at nearly half the price :)

Thanks Andy, I'm not one to rush into spending lots of money so have plenty of time to decide, I might try and rent the 6D and then the mk iii to see how they work for me I mentioned I'm not a pro however I take photography seriously for my own enjoyment, maybe one day I will move to getting a website done but I just enjoy going away and looking for the next shot.

I think the 6D is more what you're looking for tbh... I actually have both and use the 6D for long range candids with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens so it's more than capable of holding its own if you wanted to move on to doing things for cash. I actually shot work on a 7D and 40D prior to getting the 5D MK III & 6D so you can do pro work on a lot less than a 6D believe me.

Renting is a good idea... I'd just rent the 6D and if you like it buy it though, as if you get the 5D MK III in your hands you'll only want that and nothing else. It's a great camera, feels good in your hand and the AF is amazing. If you don't need it (which I don't think you do) you'd be better off resisting temptation

Thanks everyone,

as I said I'm not in a rush so have time to have a think, if I was to rent the Mk iii then your right I prob wouldn't be able to give it back however my wife would have no issues on taking it back :-), the main thing I really want out of it all is a camera that performs well in bad light with a high ISO and one that can cope with wildlife on the move. I think its time to do some reading.

Cheers to all

THe 5D MkIII is a great camera and well worth the money.

It depends on the type of photography that you do. If you dont need the advanced AF then buy a 6D, its very good. But if you see your photography branching out into subject matter where the AF and faster FPS of the 5D will be an advantage then buy the MkIII.

You dont need to be a pro photographer to justify buying a MKIII. Its just a great camera for anyone.

Its as good as they, and us owners say.

You may not need it but you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it, to me thats worth paying a bit more over the cost of the 6D.
In fact i cant see any reason to get a 6D unless you want to save money and must have full frame.
The new 70D looks much better IMO and i would guess better for wildlife than either of the FF cameras.

Remember to consider your existing lenses. You can't use EFs lenses on FF cameras.
