Im Seriously looking at getting a 5D MKii, just wondering what pit falls there might be, and if anyone nows where the cheapest places to get one, I have done some shopping around for a body and seen prices in and around £1,500 new.

All advice would be greatfully recieved.

The main lens I use at the moment is a Tamron AF 18-270

Prepare to get some L zooms, or primes. 5D will need some quality glass, otherwise there is no point.

BTW That tamron is incompatible with full frame cameras.

what sort of photography do you do? if indoor stuff then weather sealing you dont need to worry about. if studio based stuff again the focus system is plenty. Have to agree you will need to thing bigger than the cost of just the body.

Unless you have a 7D then think of batteries, Grip (if you want one), cost of any EFs lenses you need to swap and also re-arranging your lens line up if you havent already done so. If its gonig to be an addition your existing camera body, have you got the bag space for your kit.

that £1500 soon turns into a lot more.

The 5D2 is fully weather sealed like it's big brothers, or at least mine is.

The AF is 9 point not 30 or more points but for 99% of the time most people will have it centre spot. Might be a little slower than the 1d series but then again it isn't silly money to buy.

Plus points are great sensor so great image quality, great ISO performance probably the two most important things when taking photographs.

Your Tamron may have problems with vignetting though. I'm not sure it's designed for full frame sensors. The 5d2 will surely show up any faults in the lens, including things like corner focus and chromic aberations.

I'm more than impressed with my 5d2 but have to admit I've just replaced the 40D I sold, it's APS size sensor gives you the 1.6 crop and faster burst rate which sometimes is better for my birdie shots.

Like others have said, you will need to invest in some better glass.Don't expect miracles with that either.Canon 24-70,16-35 MK2 are expensive, good, but not excellent!

Never had a problem with the AF using the center point. As good as any other Canon camera.Outer points are a waste of time though.Great image quality at high iso's but could be better at low iso's.

Put some top quality glass on there and the camera really sings.

Cheers

Hmmmmm seriously getting me thinking, At this moment i have a 450d and wanting to upgrade, and have heard that the 5d Mii was the way to go, I do a combination of indoor and outdoor shooting. I am aware that new lenses will be on the shopping list later in the year.

Many thanks for the advice

Get one you'll be blown away, yes they have shortcomings but in the main they are a fantastic camera.

The only other real choice in your price range is a 7D

as far as im aware none of the 5D's are weather sealled. Only the 1D series and then te 7D have a reported level of weather sealing.

If you are buying a new body and lenses why not consider other manufacturers full frame systems too

Interesting how you say the 5d2 could be better at low ISO Gary, my 2 images show a big improvement in quality at ISO 100 under studio lighting conditions compared to my old mk1.

The focus and lack of an on board focus assist are the only things I'd like to see changed. I often shoot in clubs under ambient lighting and without the assist beam the focus is unreliable.

I have allways played with Canon, and find them easy(ish) to understand and use, i dont find it easy working out new stuff so familiarity helps with that.

Another reason why I decided to pick the brains of those in the know and am very greatfull for the help

Hi Brian

It all depends on what you are comparing to.I have directly compared the output of the 5D2 to the 1DSMK3.I found the tonal colour change to be smoother on the DS3 and the low iso noise to be a lot better.Low iso banding is also better on the DS3 and the really dark tones in an image are a lot smoother.
If I wanted to shoot at iso 3200 it would be the 5D2 every time though.

Cheers
Gary

Unless you're desperate for full frame I'd seriously consider upgrading your lenses first. I came very close to getting a 5DmkII this christmas, but decided I would be better served by getting improvements in the lens department first, and saving for the camera.

Although, if you're loaded, go nuts :D

I agree. Upgrade the lenses, then maybe a 60D or 7D body.

5D2 is whole different (expensive) way to go with image quality being the prime purpose. But you have to output pretty big to really appreciate it. Need to decide on that first, because the bigger sensor format changes everything.

I'm actually mulling over getting a 60D before getting the 5DmkII, but I like how the 30D feels and from everything I've read today I can't see any point in upgrading as I was only looking for better noise handling.

So much to buy, so little money :D

5D MKII can handle 10 mm rain in 3 minutes.

Not quite, Canon said it could survive for up to 3 minutes in rainfall of 10mm per hour, quite a different claim and it certainly has nowhere near the level of weatherproofing as either the 7d or 1d series.
This claim was confirmed by local Canon service centre as well as Borehamwood when a fellow canonite had his 5d ii fail :(

That's what I thought. I knew it wasn't in the same league with even the 7D. Both my bodies just keep out of rain apart from a light drizzle.
