I have just upgraded to the Canon 5D mark iv but having major issues importing raw images to lightroom. It says that lightroom can't read the cr2 format. I'm totally stumped as to how to fix this? I have lightroom 5 (the upgraded version) and have concluded that this software clearly won't read the files. The question is what do I need to do to fix this? I have downloaded a DNG converter but am struggling to understand how to use this? I am prepared to purchase a newer version of lightroom if I need to but not sure which to upgrade to? HELP!

Adobe have had support for the Mark IV files since September 2016 so that would be around Lightroom 6 (6.7 was the first update to receive the IV support) if I am correct. That was the last standalone license before CC that had that, but you don't get the CC features/updates so it's your call whether the subscription is worth it for you. If not then I'm pretty sure you could buy Lightroom 6 and update it as far as it will go to gain support for the Mark IV files.

Hope that helps - make sure to read the features & improvements lists of Lightroom before hitting buy (just in case I'm wrong) (y)

You have discovered the leapfrog syndrome! Essentially this describes how the inter-reliant technologies that we use advance at different rates, and lock us into an endless cycle of re-purchasing just to maintain compatibility. It's a capitalist's dream!

Anyone remember the SCSI interface (I still have a very good SCSI film scanner)?

If you have LR5.7, it's a very powerful and well-featured app. The DNG converter is not just free but easy / quickish to use - a sensible route, therefore. I can't think of a downside. Let's get on with living!
