Canon 5D and filters

Would a Cokin P series holder and filters cause major vignetting on a 5D as oppose to a 1.6 crop? Anybody have experiance of this?

It did with mine at anything less than 20 odd mm so I sawed off the front filter holder thereby only allowing one filter to be slotted in to place. Might be a time to move to Cokin Z or preferably Lee as you'd also lose the Cokin P colour cast.

Whilst we are talking about filters, I only use a polarising filter when needed because its about the only effect you cannot recreate in PS. Of course I use UV on all my lenses, but grads and warm up/cool down filters no. Are there like minded people who do the same??

I use a polariser and grads. The warm/cool filters they can be photoshop reproduced but the grads are easier and quicker and a single shot rather than bracketed and emulated in photoshop.

My polariser is the P series holder one and I would lose this with an upgrade and have to buy another one and they aint cheap

Sorry Sie - you will get vignetting on the 17-40, even on the Z Pro system As milou says, 20-22 mm is the minimum you want to go down to.

Just looked on the site and Cokin recommend:

P series - 28mm plus.
Z Pro - 20mm plus.
X Pro - 15mm plus.

X Pro is your requirement but not at those prices!! I fear you'll be needing some photo stitching

I've just moved from Cokin P (WA) to Lee due to the vignetting problems. It was especialy bad with the Cokin CPL filter which caused problems at anything below 28mm. At the moment I am using a 100mm square Lee CPL filter on a standard lens adaptor and get slight vignetting below 20mm on the 17-40mm. I have a wide angle adaptor on order and hope this will remove this vignetting as it moves the filter closer to the camera. If it doesn't remove it completely I will remove the UV filter - I'm sure that will be enough to get rid of it completely.

If you can stretch to getting a Lee filter holder I would recommend it.

This is a 5D at 24mm (24-105L so 77mm thread), Cokin P Circ Pol but stacked on the front of a Canon Protect filter.

So do I - but when it is controllable. I get similar vignetting at 24mm but when it still affects you at 28mm (as below) you know you have to get rid of the Cokin. Having said that it is the CPL which is the problem not just the filter holder.

From Cokin it will be the X Pro range - I'm not familiar with Lee or anything else.....

I'll take some pics tonight with my 17-40mm and Lee CPL with and without the UV filter in place (although this is a slim one). I think there may be slight vignetting still as I have the standard Lee lens ring rather than the wide angle version (on order!)

Ok here goes. I took these this morning with with the plainest view I could find. Wasn't really CPL weather but it was the only filter I had with me - hence the slow shutter speeds. All taken at f11 (ISO 200) with Canon EF17-40L on a 5D.

First 3 are with a UV filter fitted and using the Lee standard lens ring adaptor.

17mm - lots of vignetting

20mm - slight vignetting

24 mm - no vignetting

Ok the next 3 are still with the standard ring adaptor but with the UV filter removed so the CPL filter is closer to the lens (having said that my UV filter is a slim 4mm Hoya Pro1 Digital anyway - not as chunky as some other makes).

17mm - slight vignetting

20 mm - no vignetting

Finally this one is with the filter holder held against the lens which is what the Lee wide angle adaptor achieves (I have one on order at the moment)

17mm - no vignetting! Hurrah!

Thanks alot for that. It's a lot to consider. I have used a UV filter + GND + polariser with my current P series with no problems with my 17-40. I don't like the feeling of being restricted to what I use. Even if there is a solution I bet it's and expensive one.

Yeah as you would expect it to be on a 1.6 crop.

It just seems like an expensive game to go FF. Not only do you have to buy the 5D body but you have reconsider your filter setup and lens to fill new gaps.

Yep - lots to consider. I made the jump before I invested in any EF-S lenses and I also had some EF lenses from my EOS5 days. As regards the filter situation don't forget that at 17mm you are really looking at a 27mm fov on the 30D so you are not really getting the benefit of owning the 17-40 on that body. Lots to ponder but I don't know many 5D owners who regret their purchase.

I'd certainly recommend the Lee filter holder system. Whether you then want to pay the price for Lee filters that's another story. The holder takes 100mm filters so you can use other makes as well. Lee filters are absolute top quality so you'll have to make your own judgement on cost vs quality. Kood and Cokin have their fans. Personally I'm starting to build up a collection of Lee filters as I know I'll not upgrade them later - they are for life (unlike cameras and lenses).
