My Uncle asked me to check on here whether the above flash can be controlled wirelessly using the cameras pop up flash as a commander I think he has a Canon 500D, like I can with the Nikon CLS system. I know nothing at all about Canon features etc can anyone veirfy/deny this is possible so he can factor in whether or not he needs some form of trigger.

To retain eTTL metering you will need either a Canon 7D or a ST-E2 transmitter or another Canon flash capable of operating as a master flash - or some of the expensive range of Pocketwizards.

If you're content to work in manual you can use wireless triggers (aka Cactus Triggers, PT-04 or similar) FitP sells them on here.

I don't think the onboard flash will trigger the 580EX2 flash.
