Yes
A Canon 580EX flashgun I have, that is normally only used as a slave flashgun, when attached to a camera does not Auto Zoom as expected when zooming in / out with the lens.

I have checked it out on a couple of cameras and different lenses and made sure the flashgun head is set to 90 Degrees plus that all Custom Functions have been reset. I can hear the zoom motor working when changing the zoom settings manually and the flash works as expected. It records changes in F.Stops, but not zoom length.

If you read the manual – see below:

I am experiencing exactly as described above, although do not ever recall pulling out the wide panel excessively. The panel is not detached and the sensor appears to be working in that if you pull the panel out it changes to 14mm, and the whole LED screen blinks.

It appears from the manual that it’s a simple procedure of pushing the wide panel back in until it clicks to reset the Auto Zoom Function – but doing this does not work on mine!

I read online that it could be the ribbon thread that is attached to the sensor that may have become dislodged, but am loath to dismantle the flashgun to investigate.

Has anyone else had this occur? Is there a DIY fix or will it need to go back to Canon for dismantling and repair.

regards
