Quite simply is this still a competent flashgun in comparison to the 430EX II/580EX II?

I have been offered one relatively cheap and I'm considering it.
The last flashgun I had was a 430EX II and if was good.
Usage will be a combo of indoor flash and some out door fill lighting.

Still a good gun. Used to be top of the range.

I use one, the only thing you're missing are the ETTL II tricks, so you can't program groups from the camera, you have to use the flashgun. It doesn't zoom to match APSC cameras and it doesn't report it's colour to the camera which the new ones do apparently.

So potentially not missing out on much then and it would be used with a 5D2 so no worries re the APSC zoom match.

The APSC zoom match is a bit of a non-issue. The biggest potential loss is the inability to use the cameras ocf controls.
