Odd one, but does anyone know if the viewfinder in the canon is glass or plastic?

Mine has been very badly scratched and makes the image through it hazy, if it's plastic i can polish it out but don't want to ruin it more if it's glass.

Thanks

Do you mean the matte focusing screen above the mirror? If so then it is almost certainly plastic. However, you won't be able to polish it as it will look dreadful through the viewfinder and you will probably find that the focusing points are etched onto this and you'l probably lose these too.

Replacement is the way forward, they aren't difficult to change and can be picked up on ebay for less than £10.

Thanks Chris, i will be getting the focusing screen replaced, but the bit i mean is this.

Should have just called it the eye piece lol, it's been badly scratched with many light scratches.

AFAIK the eyepiece 'glass' is a lens...... plastic or glass if you (try) polish out scratches it is possible that you might affect its optical magnification that the dioptor adjustment will not compensate for??? If that happens the viewfinder image will not be in focus for your eye(s)!

Just how did it get so badly scratched as it is quite recessed........I have never read of that happening to anyone. FWIW, a bit like minor scratches to the front element of a lens not showing on the image, any minor(?) scuffs on the eyepiece will not or should not affect the relative clarity of the view.

If it heavily damaged and actually affecting your use of the camera then it would probably just be easier to replace the entire viewfinder (if you are confident doing this yourself) or get it done for your. The part can be had for £59 new here. Alternatively you might be able to pick a used salvaged part up on ebay if you are lucky.

I would say though that depending on how tight money is you may be getting into the realms of BER as we put it at work (Beyond Economic Repair)..
