Yes
I’m thinking of getting one of these for photographing dragonflies
What’s it like for sharpness at minimum focus distance at 250mm ?
I’ve already got the 70-200 f4 what’s the sharpness compared to that lens
I realise it won’t be as good but is it still decent in comparison
I’m thinking of getting the stm lens for the IS as most of the time I’ll be hand holding the lens
I’m already using a canon 100L for macro and thinking of the stm lens for those occasions when I can’t get close enough with the 100mm

I'm at home today so thought I'd take some comparison pics. First 3 (12,15, 16) are from a 7D and 55-250STM at 250mm and the last one (18) is with a 70-200 F4 IS at 200. All at or around minimum focus distance, hand held with IS on, the 70-200 set to 1.2m. No processing, raws simply downloaded with EOS Ute and saved as 2meg jpegs in Photoshop.

Will need to batch the pics...

thanks very much for taking the trouble to do comparison pictures that’s brilliant I’ll have a proper look later on my pc when I’m back home

When you do, the difference between 15 and 16 is f5.6 and f8. So, to me, it's sharper stopped down a bit (I really should have put that in the OP)

Thanks I’m normally at F6.3 or 7.1 with natural light and focus stack so will be stopped down a bit so it does look like the lens will be perfect

Thanks again Andy for doing these Ive had a look on my PC screen and can see what you mean about the lens being sharper slightly stopped down although F5.6 is still ok
Am going to order it tonight from HDEW I have bought gear from them before and they are excellent :)

Almost all lenses are a little sharper when stopped down, but not all lenses are 'sharp enough' wide open. I found the 55-250 stm to be decent enough in that dept, I've actually seen reviewers [such as Christopher Frost] claim if it was much better built it could be an L lens

Thanks Keith that’s good to know :)

That's where I bought mind, was delivered to me within 5 days and I'm in Ireland so you should have yours by the weekend with a bit of luck :) enjoy
Thanks
