I purchased this lens on Monday and when using the IS on it there is a humming noise coming from the camera, is this something i should be concerned about as i have not noticed it when using the 18-55 kit lens
 
Mine does exactly the same thing Steve. I think what you are hearing is the motors in the lens that handles the IS. You should see the image in the viewfinder settle and stop shifting around when the noise starts. I too have never noticed this on the kit lens, except when using 30second exposures with the camera tripod mounted and IS on. Turn off IS when mounting on a tripod.
 
We've got four IS lens in the house and on three of them the IS makes a little noise, the one that doesn't is the 18-55 IS (that was the one I was worried about to start with :))
