Canon 50mm 1.8

It will be very hard to tell the difference between the two at f9

i think stick with the kit lens, the whole point of buying the nifty fifty is for using wide open,i have one and love it @f2.8 99.99% of the time

I have to concur with this got my nifty fifty a few weeks ago and I love the really great/shallow DoF that you can achieve with it but can see no reason to use it past f/4

Hiya i was just wondering would the Canon 50mm 1.8 be sharper at F.9 than my kit lens (18-55mm EFS lens) ?
There is more to a lens than just sharpness - you should see better colour rendition from the 50mm, and probably better contrast. I'd think it might be a tiny but sharper too but I doubt there would be much in it on that front.

Shallower DOF doesn't always equal better you want to use whatever is appropriate for the setting/subject. I personally find photos whose sole point of interest is bokeh very predictable and dull. Use it to enhance, not make it the main point of the photo.

to answer the OP: according to photozone the 50mm has better border performance than the 18-55 IS (at f/8) but the centre sharpness is similar. Chromatic aberration is an issue with the 18-55 as well. 50mm is really sharp at f/5.6 and the test results match my personal experience.

At f/9 50mm 1.8 will be only slightly sharper so not sure you will notice it.

You can see how sharp lenses are at different focal ranges and different "f " here www.slrgear.com

I'm following this resource for last couple of years and in my opinion their tests are very realistic. Lets say having owned around 10 different lenses I could see exactly the same performance as it is according to ther tests.

So I can highly recommend Slrgear

wow that slrgear is a pretty useful resource. Also just got a 50mm 1.8 and I Love it, definitely seems to be sharper and more punchy than the kit lens
