Canon 50D firmware update 1.0.3

i only got my 50D yesterday, it has 1.0.2 on, hmmm, guess i'll update this later.

Just updated this morning.

Not tried anything with new firmware yet though.

Thanks!

I'm on 1.02 and have shot around 500 images with six Canon lenses with no problems whatsoever. I find the explanations by Canon to be laughable. When exactly should you insert the battery or press the shutter button? How can the timing of these actions be "wrong" or cause a problem for the camera? It's just silly. I will not be updating my firmware until there is a good reason to do so.

EDIT : I have now updated my firmware, not because of any problem but simply because there are no reports of ill-effects from the upgrade and I guess prevention is better than cure. I've shot a few hundred images since upgrading and had no problems.

Thanks for that Bob  I'm on 1.0.1 and have been looking out for the update

I'm with you on this one based on Canon's explanations but people running 1.0.1 will see a benefit.
The side issue is that not all changes are recorded in the update notes and there are quite often changes made without announcement that may be beneficial as well as changes to fix problems that Canon haven't admitted to having.

You makes your choice and you takes your chance.

Bob

I always upgrade to the latest firmware because sometimes there are fixes and performance improvements that are not mentioned in the write-up. Usually to cover up things the company would be embarrassed to admit

Just a quick question for you guys who have updated the firmware on your 50D's - in the instructions it says to use a cf card of 2GB or less. Does it have to be 2GB or less, and if so, why?

I've read speculative reports that the 2GB limit is simply a legacy from the days when 2GB was the largest card size available and for reasons known only to Canon they have never bothered to update the text. There is a question mark over different versions of FAT file system used above and below the 2GB threshold and whether that has any influence on the advice. Again that is no more than speculative guesswork.

FWIW I upgraded my firmware using a 32GB card which had been formatted in the camera but also had images on the card. i.e. it was not freshly formatted immediately prior to the upgrade. The ugrade went without a hitch.

Just another question I know this post for the 50d But my brother in law on here pugwash has now got a 1DMk2 and needs to update his firmware would it be easy enough for him to do it the way shown on link. He a bit wary about doing it he wants travel through to Glasgow to get in done in shop which is a fair old trail, as he now moved to scottish borders and at present has no internet yet looks fairly straight forward to me.
I could get him here and let him do it using my comp if its not too complicated. ?

Jaco, it really is a piece of cake! Just download the correct firmware, put it on an "in camera" formated CF card. Select "Firmware" in the camera's menu and let it run the update. There's no more to it than that :) (Just don't turn the camera off whilst it's updating lol)

Just to add, firmware updated OK. Thanks to Canon Bob for the link and to tdodd for answering my cf card question. It really is easy to do, it only took a couple of minutes even for someone as computer illiterate as myself!

Great I will get him over here then to do it save him a long trip and petrol exspense I did think looking at the link it wasnt that complicated i will print out the instructions anyway and thnx for reply`s :)

Pugwash`s firmware updated this morning thnx all :) He a happy chappy saved a long trip plus fee from shop .:)
