Hope someone can give some advice please.

I've just bought a Canon 50D from Amazon marketplace.

The camera looks to be in good over all condition but it's just shown an error 30

Turned off and on again a few times now and it takes a few shots then comes up with the error again.

Had a quick look on google and it seems to point to a shutter fault but would like to make sure.

I'm using a Lexar Professional 8GB 233x speed memory card if that makes a difference.

I've tried a 16GB Class 10 Transflash SDHC card in an CF adapter and the same fault appears.

I don't really want to be spending more money getting it repaired as it only came this morning.

Not sure what to do and would like some advice if possible.

Thanks

Andy

Did you not Google it? I found it in a few seconds!

Unfortunately its a shutter fault, your camera will need a service.

The seller would have known about this I would have thought?

Which lens are you using?

Shouldn't think its a lens issue. The err 30 is a shutter fault on all Canon's.

Its definitely worth seeing if it does it on other lenses though, just to rule out the gremlins!

Thanks for the replies.

I did google it and said it sounded like a shutter fault but wanted a second opinion.

I would have thought the seller would have known as it comes up very quickly.

I don't suppose a service will be all that cheap?

The lens thats on it at the moment is a Tamron SP 70-300 vc di

Just going to try the kit lens from my old camera.

Andy

A service wont be cheap. How was it advertised? You may be able to put the sale into dispute and possibly get some funds that way?

Nope does the same witht the 18-55 IS as well.

It was advertised as used-very good condition well kept and no visible marks.

Its shutter count is just over 5000

Guess its time to get in touch with the seller and see what happens.

Andy

No way should it go after on 5000 shots! How was that recorded? Was that from the seller? The seller would have definitely known about it. Definately contact them and Amazon. Might be worth a refund and buying from somewhere else.

Yes it was from the seller, I'm sure they must have known about it as the camera is unusable as it is.
Certainly going to try for a refund and try somewhere else probably somewhere with a warranty.
We'll see how the Amazon service is with the marketplace sellers, i hope its as good as themselves.
Thanks for your help.

Andy

I asked about the lens because some Sigmas behave badly on Canon bodies, dont think I've read Tamron have any problems, as you have tried a Canon lens and its still not working it does seem to rule the lens out (it was only ever going to be a slim chance anyway).

Hi Andy, I've just bought a s/hand 50D and am very interested to hear the outcome of this. Please keep us updated. Good luck.

David

Just received a reply from the seller, I have to deal with them first.

As I was expecting they have said there was nothing wrong with it when it was sent out and that they'd specificaly tested it before it was sent as they hadn't used it in a while.

Also asked what lenses I had tried with it so have let them know.

Will see what they say now, have asked for a refund as it is not fit for purpose.

David, hope you have more success with yours.

I wouldnt worry, they are VERY robust!

Which is why I questioned where the OPs shutter count had come from, as the shutter on his seems to be going at 5k actuations (if the buyer is to be taken on face value), but they are designed for near on 200k actuations.

The shutter count came from the seller to start with but I checked it with Eosinfo as well and i think it was about 5200 actuations.

Got nothing to gain from lieing about it, rather disapointed to be honest as I was very impressed with the camera in the little time I had with it.

Was looking forward to getting going with it.

Any how the seller has now gotten back to me and is willing to refund when I send the camera back to them.

Obviously have got to hope that they refund my money ok.

Then I have to start looking again.

Thanks

Andy

Thanks for the comforting advice Jim. I checked with 40DShuttercount and my body has only 2350 actuations. I wasn't really worried, just intrigued as to the cause of the error and the outcome. So far I am absolutely delighted with the camera.

Just an update incase anyone was interested.

The seller has got the camera back, confirmed the fault and has given me a full refund.
Lucky it went so smoothly I think.

Now have to start looking again.

Can I ask though what do you feel would be an acceptable shutter count considering it will be a second hand unit.

Been looking at MPB Photographic and they range from 3000 to over 40000 actuations.

Just don't want to make the same mistake again.

Thanks

Andy

As I said, they should be good for 200k plus!

Just go for the best one you can afford.

Thanks for your help, will get looking now.

They are rated to 150k but as any mechanical part they can fail at any time so as long as it's not sky high I wouldn't worry, especially if buying from the likes of MPB - you'll have a six month warranty.

Thanks, I am leaning towards a shop specifically because of the warranty.

Worth it for the peace of mind I think.
