Ah! so now we know what will be in the up-coming 40D

Canon crams 50 megapixels into a CMOS prototype

You won't be seeing one of these sensors in your fashioncam any time soon. Canon has built a 50 megapixel CMOS monstrosity, which is reportedly almost twice the resolution of its nearest competition, and is prepping it as a sort of large format surveillance camera for monitoring large, busy areas such as parking lots and theme parks, along with detailed work like factory part inspections. Despite the sensor's clear industrial-end aims, Canon has managed to build its prototype at 19 x 28mm in size, the same dimensions of the sensors in its DSLR cameras, so who knows where this tech could end up in the long run. So far Canon hasn't even announced release plans for this current incarnation, so we aren't going to go hawking our existing shooter just yet.

This doesnt seem that good as they already pack so much in to a smaller sensor for pocket digital cams

Noisy

Thats what i was thinking, I cannot honestly atm see the point in producing such a high MP sensor in such a small format, I expected it too be a large format size, or even just that they had bolted 4x 5D sensors together and stuck them into a large format style housing. (which I think would have much more potential and market, imo) Even if they were able to drop one of these into the 5dmkII, which isnt going to happen, i doubt there is a lens on the market which would come anywhere near to making use of it.

Brummie has a point, When you look at the sensor sizes here.

But they are CCD sensors. Are there are any compact CMOS models? If not the highest pixel density currently in use would be the 10mp of the 400D.

Michael.

The 1Ds MKII is a beautiful camera (and i wont part with it!!) but the 5D handles higher ISO noise much better. Both FF, 16.7mp in the 1, 12.8mp in the 5. Go figure :)

5D has newer technology inside too ... that must help somewhat over the 1dsmk2

Is Canon looking at entering the medium format market then or are they planning to SUPER dominate the "35mm" market?

Slightly O/T but anyone want to speculate where the 5D will go?

Its getting really difficult to predict where movement will be: You've got to expect that the digic III will make it to the 1Ds mkII and possibly the 5D - but who knows what other tweaks there may be............ better ISo handing at the extreme end.........? Dust reduction as with 400D and 1D mkIII (by the way - does anyone, with experience of owning this think its a valuable addition??)

Completely useless IMO. (I have the 400D). When taking my photo for the "Spring" competition I set my camera to F22 and shot against a white background. I was horrified by the amount of sensor dust that showed up  I'll post up the original file when I get home, it's enough to force Janice to get her Dremel out again

You mean the 'grinding' attachment? The dremel itsself is never put away :naughty:

I had a bit of a play with the 400D and specifically tested this dust thing repeatedly

Complete gimmick if you ask me, pity I deleted the comparisons a while ago

50MP file sizes. They'll work nice and fast on your average home PC won't they.

Well, the big boys want 50Mb Image files don't they?

If you're talking about picture libraries I reckon it's just to put aunty mavis off from bombarding them with ****. Anyone whose camera doesn't produce 50MB files but still wants to submit just upscales them.

Hey!!:bat:

My mom's name is Mavis...seriously!

Jonnyreb,

"Dust reduction as with 400D and 1D mkIII (by the way - does anyone, with experience of owning this think its a valuable addition??)"

Dust removal systems seem to be a sales gimmick and pretty useless, just an expensive useless add-on. I posted this link to actual tests on another site a while ago:-

Well works quite well on my olympus. No dust yet. And i cant put that down to being too careful.

that review / test is an interesting read, but I think it is a little bit extreme.

Would have been better in to see how they coped with realistic amounts of dust.

I have taken my D50 to a racetrack and got a cloud of dust straight into the camera / my face. And only had a half dozen or so specs make it to the sensor
