Considering investing in a couple of 430's just wondering if anyone has anything bad to say about them from personal experience?

Have they ever let anyone down or not been up to a task?

Great bit of kit! I have two also and decided to purchase them over 580's. Very good and if I need more lighting I will take the project to a studio. :)

Go for it!

The 430 EXii's are excellent, although not as good as the 580 EXii's, but lower in price. If you can manage it get one of each and use the 580 as main and 430 as fill light. |However 2 x 430's will still do,

Well that's the order in for 2, hopefully get them on Thursday, just in time for my Friday shoot. I'll try pick up a second hand 580EXII later in the year but to be honest I have the pocket wizard style triggers from calumet so not sure if I'll bother.

I'll only really loose the TTL control, which is no big concern as looking into it you only really have a narrow window for the line of sight for it to work which would be useless for side lighting etc.

Think I can now finally part with my Nissin flash which has served me well for over 4 years :)

Chris,

Have you checked other brands, like Yongnuo?
Or are you only interested in Canon?

Coupled with my 580EX it works very well. It's also robust so good for outdoor work.

I already have a Yongnuo flash, just one of the fully manual ones. I also have a Nissin Di622, which has served me well for years.

Basically I wanted a TTL flash like my Nissin, and one that can be fired on remotes like my Yongnuo.

The Canon's also are able to be used in low light to aid focus, an area the Nissin fails at.

Then there's build quality, these flashes will be used for years so I need them to be built to a quality that will last, eventually they will become purely slaves but in the mean time they will be used heavily for on and off camera depending on the type of shoots I'm on.
