Hello,

I'm looking at getting the 430 EX II as my first flash.
I would mainly be wanting to use it off camera using a wireless trigger.

I realise the 430 ex II can only be used as a slave and not a master.

What is the point of a master?

Doesn't a wireless transmitter take the place of a master?

If I had a few 430's off camera, would I need a master like the 530EX II to use them or would the wireless transmitter work?

Thanks!

Radio triggers are used with the flash in manual mode. With a master flash, ettl is available to automatically adjust flash power.

I've got similar kit to you Mike and I opted for a 580 to act as a master. This was before the ST-E2 cheaper clone was available, back when I had to choose it was a £300 flash or £180 trigger. I decided I'd rather spend the additional £120 and have effectively a backup 580 aswell. I glad I went this route as I have since read Syl Arena's advice in his speedliting handbook, thankfully that info is also availble here online http://speedliting.com/how-to/resist-the-st-e2-temptation/

I am assuming that you require ETTL rather than basic manual functionality as there are cheaper manual triggers available.

You will have better consistency and top creative control using your flash in manual. Why not buy some rf602 radio triggers and give that a go in manual first? Little bit of a learning curve but great fun at the same time!

Isn't manual only good for subjects that hold the same position?
And what if I wanted to put the flash in a awkward place like high up - I would then have to climb up each time to adjust it?

I would think having the option of both manual and ettl would cover the most ground?

Deputy dawg> nope havent head of those, are they similar to Pixel King?

St-e2's have a range of about 5 meters. If you've the 580ex2 on your camera as master then it's a big powerful light source on top of your camera acting as the trigger, not always where you want the light.

I've got three canon flashguns, a st-e2, but as well have bought two cheap manual flashguns for £40 from Amazon for using with RF602 wireless triggers and lightstands. I got fed up of busting my expensive flashguns when they fell off the stand or the stand fell over. Really easy to manage and set up and adjust the power and has moved both my studio and nightime photography onwards.

Edit: I bought two of these as add on's to my existing Canon flashes.
