Hi

Currently contemplating getting the Canon 40D what with the current cash back offers meaning it hits around the £600 mark.

What I am wondering is if it is worth paying the extra £200odd to get the 40D+ 17-85mm kit over just the body?

I was going to just get the 40D and invest in the Sigma 10-20mm lens, as well as probably getting the 50mm f1.8 (or possibly the f1.4)

Checking standalone prices for the 17-85mm lens shows that buying it in the kit you save around £50.

I would personally rather get the body only and 10-20 but if its worth it I would get the 17-85mm.

I plan on doing more landscape type work, and as I am not going on holiday for a while I don't think I will be needing the longer focal length yet.

Thanks for any feedback :)

A standard lens (17-85) is always a nice piece of kit to have but you seem pretty sorted in your head on what you are going to be shooting. The 50mm will cover the rest (just use feet zoom)

I have a 17-85 and think its a great lens but have heard people say they are not too impressed.

So I personally think save your money and get the 10-20 and body only.....or if money is not too much of a problem get the 17-85 as well as the 10-20 because £200 is a good price for the 17-85.......

Hope this helps a little.

Personally I wouldnt get the 17-85 as I dont rate it. I have one and never use it anymore (it lives on my 20D body gathering dust). When I did use it as my primary lens I was never that impressed with what
it delivered. The results were usually soft and it suffers from fringing at the edges and barrel distortion wide open (and some pincussion at 85mm).

It's "OK" as a walkabout lens, but the 17-55 EFS IS f2.8 knocks it for six with IQ.

If you are on a budget then the "£50" 17-55 EFS f4.5/5.6 kit lens is a better option as it's about the same optically and you wont cry too much (if at all) when you swap it out for a better lens later.

My tuppence worth

Thanks for the informative replies :)

I guess I am fairly set on what I want but kept getting the feeling I had read somewhere that the 17-85 was a very good lens for the money.

Money isn't really an issue but I like to keep myself in check and dont want to spend £200 on a glorified paper weight :D and think a 10-20mm, a 50mm and then in the future a longer length lens would be the most sensible option.

I have a s9600 camera I can use in the mean time for longer shots.
