Gents,

Just wondered if anyone had any advice on this. Looking to get a camera for my son to use, that I could use as a back-up if necessary.

Kind regards

I've a 40D, but a friend has a 500D and I have to say I was most impressed with the IQ and screen, not had a chance to do any side by side tests but it looked very promising. Of course the build quality is nothing like the xxD bodies though- no contest there!

40d is growing old
i have the 500 d and recently tried the 550 and man i wish I had that one :(

go with the 50d, newer than the 50d and I would say a set up from the 500 and 550, body wise and controls at least.

does the 50d outshine the 500 in iso performance?

as far as I know 50d is the armoured version of the 500 but the 550 def outshines the 500 hands down in iso

Im not sure on the iso but I cant fault the 50D

I hate the thought of a camera having video, its a feature your paying for that I think it best kept to a video camera.

so the 50d and 550d similar price, 550 has useless (for me anyway) video, 50d has much better body and controls.

performance wise I would say very similar.

EDIT sorry just realised you said 500D not 550 lol

You'd get on much better with the 40D as all the controls work in the same way as the 7D

This. Tried to use my 400d after a year of 40d and 7d.. Completely lost with the buttons etc, missed almost all my shots.

40D, 50D and 7D all have same controls. Position of buttons on back plate moves slightly.

20D and 30D the controls are reversed and was really annoying when I was using a 40D and a 30D together.

the button you want is at the front its in the same place on both camera's :naughty:

when i had my 500d i thought it was pretty noisy from 400 iso onwards, although usable.
at 800 iso it starts to get a bit iffy and 1600-3200 are unusable imo.

in terms of image quality, my own research led me to believe that the 550d is a very decent performer, better than the 50d and 500d at equivalent iso.

if pure image quality and iso performance is what you are after, it would seem to me that the 550d is the better camera out of those you listed.

if fps, build quality and other pro features are what you need, then the 40/50d seems the sensible option.

given this is for your son, i'd get him spanking new 550d. i'm sure he'll be chuffed to bits with it.

Another vote for the 550D here, I don't have one but its performance is better than the alternatives.
Another concern is across several forums I have seen 40D's needing shutter replacement at what I would deem a fairly early point in their life.

Reckon my 40D must be hanging on for dear life at 68K clicks then

No rhyme or reason to when things go wrong, remember seeing a thread where a chap had both his 5D mkii's fail comparatively early.
Sure others have had the total opposite experience and no doubt its the same with most model of camera

Who knows if the same will happens with the 550D, bit early to say yet if a pattern emerges.
Do wonder just how much use some of these cameras get, just sold one myself with hardly any wear, preferred using an older camera that I felt happier bashing about a bit (maybe using robustly would be a better term):)
