The 50mm will be great for portraits. People really rave about it. If you are wanting to take pictures of nature, the 50mm will not be the best for this. For nature you will want some kind of zoom or a big prime - 400mm should do it!! Again thoug, what kind of naature do you want to take? Macro, birds, flowers etc?
I understand that you just want to take photos! I had to ask the question because the type of photos you take will have a massive bearing on the best lens for purpose.
Another question would be your budget, as you can spend anything from sensible money to extortionate amounts!
I have the 40D and the 50mm 1.4. The lens is a superb portrait lens, and thats my main are of work. It also works well in low light, which works well if i do any concert photography and flash isn't allowed.
If this is your first 50mm lens, then I'd suggest the much cheaper 50mm 1.8 Mk2. It will give you a taste if what this lens can achieve, and so after using that if you feel you need something faster you can buy the 50mm 1.4.
I have the combo you mention and am happy with the results but watch for the 1.6x crop factor, the 50mm can feel pretty tight and restrictive sometimes.
I also use a 24-60mm and 10-20mm zoom and this covers most situations I shoot in.
That lens is great, but I think that what you are looking for is a 24-105L or a 24-70L. Both lens are not cheap, but with a good camera like yours (and mine ) I think it worth the investment.
If you want to go cheaper go with a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 - you can get it around £60 new or even cheaper used) for portrait and a 17-85mm for landscape (you can get it around £200).
