Hi
Does anyone know if it is possible to have the flash go off at only the end of the exposure, rather than at the beginning and then the end.
This question applies to both on and off camera, I am completely new to using an off camera flash and little experience of using the on camera, other than the auto setting.

Any help appreciated
Neil

Yes, it's possible. It sounds like you're confusing the pre-flash with the second-curtain main flash.

The pre-flash is used for exposure metering but doesn't appear in the picture. You can't switch off the pre-flash on a 40D as there is no full manual flash option with the pop-up.

Second-curtain remote flash is not possible with the standard Canon system, though there are workarounds. Easiest way is with a Phottix Odin radio control system but that will cost you £300-plus.

Hi Richard
Thanks for your reply, as i said completely new to this so as you said mis understanding what the first flash was. So could i not use second curtain with a speedlite 430x Mk2? If it is wired.

Thanks
Neil

I think what Richard has said is you cannot use 2nd curtain sync if the flash is fired using remote triggers....ie off camera....

2nd curtain sync will work with your camera and flash with the flash mounted in the cameras hot shoe.....

Yes, that would work just as if the flash was on-camera.

Thanks
Neil

Yes, but to be clear. Remote second-curtain sync is not available via the native light/IR mastering system, and neither is it with cheap radio triggers - they're strictly normal sync triggering, manual exposure control only.

But you can have radio remote second-curtain sync with the Phottix Odin, and with the Pocket Wizard Mini/Flex you can have that plus quite a few other tricks that the native Canon system doesn't have at all.

Thanks Jeff and Richard,

Was hoping that was what you meant. Thanks for your help.
